Demolition has started in preparation for a new wading pool at McKennan Park.

The old pool and bathhouse demolition started last week and is expected to take about two weeks.

Construction of the new pool is scheduled to start between mid-May and early June.

The existing facilities were more than 50 years old “and had long served their useful life,” said Mike Patten, park development manager for the Sioux Falls Parks & Recreation Department.

The new facilities will be constructed to the latest standards and ADA requirements and will breathe new life into the park and provide a quality experience to the user.

The $4.4 million project includes a donation from Pierce and Barbara McDowell through the Sioux Falls Parks Foundation, an affiliate of the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation.

It allows up to $2.5 million to support expanded concessions, additional spray features and shade structures, and irrigation of the turf surrounding the pool.

“It will also be used for enhancements to the building’s architecture, as well as an additional sculpture that will recognize Helen McKennan, who donated the parkland in 1908,” Patten said.

The park will remain open during construction, but the pool and restroom area will be fenced off.

“Park users are urged to be cautious while using the park and be mindful for construction activity,” Patten added.

The wading pool is expected to be ready to use by the 2026 swim season. It will continue to be free to use.

In the meantime, flowers are in bloom across the park. Here’s a glimpse of what’s waiting for visitors:
