Century of partnerships: Individuals, organizations connect with EmBe’s mission

There are few organizations in Sioux Falls founded by women that have reached their centennial anniversary.

EmBe, which marks 100 years serving the city’s women and families this year, is one of them.

Avera, which dates back to 1897, is another — marking 125 years in 2022.

So, working together only seems natural – and has for decades.

“As the largest female-founded organization in the area, and being founded by the sisters, we want to empower women of all backgrounds. EmBe has helped us reach a diverse population through multiple channels,” said Lindsey Meyers, Avera’s vice president of public relations, communications and digital strategy.

Avera, a multi-decade partner of EmBe, has committed to the organization in a multitude of ways, from employees serving on its board and volunteering, to sponsorship of major programs and events.

“When your organization reaches 100 or 125 years old, having a foundation like that is something you take very seriously. You don’t exist that long without being able to evolve with the times and meet people where they’re at in different stages of life, and that’s the amazing about both our organizations,” Meyers said.

“You’ve seen both of us change direction and meet the needs of the community at the time we’re living in.”

As EmBe marks its centennial, it’s reflecting on the contributions of both organizations and individuals.

“We only exist and thrive because of partnerships – at all levels, from those who have briefly crossed our path to those who have dedicated decades to us,” said Susanne Gale, EmBe’s chief development officer.

“We’ve been gratified by how many of them have chosen to further support us during this milestone year and continue to encourage us as we evolve to meet the changing needs of those we serve.”

Alissa Matt is one of many EmBe supporters who personally have decided to help crowd fund in honor of the centennial.

She first encountered EmBe as both a young mother and a young professional looking for childcare.

“The support this organization provides has really, from a personal perspective, made a huge difference in our lives,” she said.

She gave back to EmBe first as a member of its marketing committee, then began as a board member this summer, and most recently she joined in a crowd funding effort to help raise $100,000 in 100 days.

“Crowdfunding is great, certainly, for raising funds, but equally important it’s about raising awareness,” she said.

“When a peer is asking you to give and sharing their own experience, it puts a face to the ask. And as EmBe is celebrating this milestone and embarking on a new path forward, transitioning its space and leadership and development of programs, it’s really important the community is aware of what EmBe is doing and has an opportunity to participate financially. I just genuinely believe in the mission of this organization and think it’s something everyone should be aware of, because it touches everyone.”

Matt set up a crowdfunding page, on a platform organized by EmBe, and shared her personal donation link through email and social media, including both individual contacts and sharing with her network.

Many others did, too.

“We’re so thankful to our EmBe supporters who came alongside us and shared our story and the opportunity to give with their family, friends and broader networks,” Gale said.

“Thanks to their support, we’ve already raised more than $64,000 and are confident the momentum is continuing to build.”

And here’s one big boost in that direction: Beginning today — which is officially EmBe’s 100th birthy — a community donor has offered a $50,000 match for all gifts from now until the organization’s celebration on Sept. 28.

“This is just an amazing way to say ‘Happy anniversary, EmBe’ and see your gift multiply,” Gale said. “We know this community is filled with people who have been touched by EmBe over time and we hope they’ll celebrate with us in such a meaningful way.”

Meyers, at Avera, can relate to the experience of women like Matt.

She, too, relied on EmBe for childcare.

“EmBe’s childcare offered flexibility as a working mom I wouldn’t have otherwise, because they were open at different hours and school holidays. They’ve just been a great support system since day one.”

EmBe also entered her life as a young professional, when she was awarded a Tribute to Women award for her work in marketing.

“I was a team of one at the time, and I really felt so ‘seen,’ I don’t know how else to say it, but so recognized,” she said. “I thought there was no way I would win that award. And when I did, it felt like I was really a legitimate person in the community who could really contribute. It was an amazing award to win.”

Avera is the presenting sponsor for EmBe’s Night of Courage a fundraiser celebrating 100 years of impact on Sept. 28. It will feature Stephanie Land, the author of the New York Times Bestseller turned Netflix series Maid, who will provide a keynote followed by EmBe’s vision for the future.

“Like us, they’re a pioneering women’s organization in Sioux Falls and so we felt like it was a great fit to work together on this event and make sure we’re celebrating in a meaningful way the milestone that EmBe is achieving,” Meyers said.

“We committed last year when the idea was first presented. And we continue to get together and brainstorm solutions and ways to partner. There’s just great synergy between us. We look for areas where Avera can bring a health solution and EmBe can meet the needs of women, families and children and we’ll continue to do so for many years to come.”
