‘Book of Mormon’ leaves Sioux Falls audience laughing

From the opening number to the finale, “The Book of Mormon” blends a high-energy performance with plenty of humor.
“People can expect satire, comedy and real heart, especially once you get past the jokes and understand the general message of the show, which everyone can interpret a little different,” said Berlande Millus, who plays Nabulingi, a girl in Uganda who ultimately is persuaded to join the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
The musical comedy follows the exploits of two mismatched missionaries sent to Uganda to share the teachings of the Book of Mormon.
For Millus, who is based in New York, the show marks her first visit to Sioux Falls. The current “Book of Mormon” cast began rehearsals in late August and has been on the road since mid-September.

“We’re really in the vibe of things, and I’m really excited for people to see the show,” she said. “With comedy, it’s all about timing, so when we feel the audience’s energy, it’s a collaborative effort, and that’s the way the audience is part of the show. It makes it even more hilarious, and we’re laughing onstage.”
The Sioux Falls audience delivered plenty of laughs Friday night. If you’re considering the show, remember it was written by the creators of “South Park,” which gives an idea of the sort of comedy you can expect. There is explicit language, so keep that in mind before bringing kids.
“And long as you’re open-minded and can have a good time and can handle a few cuss words, you’ll end up enjoying it,” Millus said.
The show has drawn widespread praise, with The New York Times calling it “the best musical of this century.” The Washington Post says, “It is the kind of evening that restores your faith in musicals.” And Entertainment Weekly says, “Grade A: the funniest musical of all time.”
