Artists sought to submit work for city bus wraps

City buses soon will feature original local artwork — and artists are invite to submit theirs for consideration.

Sioux Area Metro, which is operated by transit provider Via, is creating a series of bus wraps showcasing local art from those who live or work in the Sioux Falls area. The idea is to turn “everyday transit vehicles into moving pieces of art,” the organization said.

Four selected designs will be professionally produced and wrapped onto SAM buses, where they will be seen daily by thousands of riders, pedestrians and drivers throughout Sioux Falls.

The submission process is open to artists 18 and older of all backgrounds and experience levels who live or work in the Sioux Falls area. Design submissions will be reviewed and chosen by an artist selection panel and approved by the city’s Visual Arts Committee. The winning designers will receive a $500 cash award and one year of free SAM rides.

SAM/Via is especially encouraging submissions that highlight:

• Life in Sioux Falls.
• Local pride, landmarks and culture.
• Bold, colorful, eye-catching visuals.

“Public transit is one of the most visible community spaces we have in Sioux Falls,” said Maren Engel, the city’s arts coordinator.

“This is an exciting opportunity to celebrate local artists and turn our buses into moving canvases that reflect the growing artistic scene in our city.”
