Road Report: July 27, 2026

Construction season is here, so we’re back with our weekly look at what projects are done, where you’ll find traffic impacts and what’s scheduled next.

What’s underway

Eighth Street: Crews are making good progress on the reconstruction project at Eighth Street west of Weber Avenue in downtown.

All underground utility work is complete, and crews are working on the concrete street surfacing.

Vehicle traffic is being detoured to Sixth Street, but pedestrian traffic is being maintained throughout the project.

The city portion of this work on Eighth Street is expected to be complete in August.

BNSF Railway will do the signal crossing work later this fall. After the city portion of the work on Eighth Street is complete, work will move to the railroad crossing near Third Street and Weber Avenue.

After both locations are complete, it will allow the city to request certification from BNSF for a quiet zone designation. If approved, this designation would allow train engineers to stop routinely sounding horns at public crossings.

However, if the crossings are designated as a quiet zone, train horns still may be used in emergency situations or to comply with federal regulations and railroad operating rules.

Arrowhead & Veterans: Crews are making steady progress on the Arrowhead and Veterans parkways intersection project.

On the west side of Veterans Parkway, crews are working on grading, installation of storm drainage infrastructure, constructing retaining walls and constructing the west half of the pedestrian underpasses beneath the road.

On the east side of Veterans Parkway, work continues on the center median and sidewalks.

Arrowhead Parkway will remain closed between Veterans and Highline Avenue for the remainder of the construction season.

Veterans Parkway will remain open at all times.

All lanes are expected to reopen to traffic later this fall. Final cleanup and restoration work may occur in the spring of 2027.

Minnesota Avenue: Construction continues to move forward on Minnesota Avenue between Second and Eighth streets.

Crews paved the west side of Minnesota between Second and Fourth last week.

Crews are busy building the connecting sections between the side streets and Minnesota in this segment, along with other miscellaneous work.

Crews will be paving the center turn lane and median curb this week. To accomplish this work, northbound traffic on Minnesota will be detoured between 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. today and Tuesday.

Northbound traffic will be detoured to Eighth Street, Dakota Avenue, Sixth Street, Main Avenue and Brookings Street.

Southbound traffic will not be impacted. Underground utility work on the east side of Minnesota between Fourth and Eighth streets should be wrapping up within the next two to three weeks.

After that, crews will grade this area, install gravel and start concrete paving.

Work on this project is expected to be substantially complete in November. Final cleanup and restoration work may occur in the spring of 2027.

Western Avenue: The outside northbound lane of Western Avenue closed at 51st Street on July 22 to allow crews to perform accessible curb ramp repairs. One lane of northbound traffic on Western will be maintained in the inside lane. Motorists should expect delays. This work is expected to be complete mid-to-late this week.

What’s next

476th Avenue: Beginning today, 476th Avenue/Minnehaha County Highway 125 will be closed from Slip Up Creek Road to Interstate 90 to allow crews to install utilities under the roadway. Traffic will be detoured via 258th Street, South Dakota Highway 115/Cliff Avenue and I-90. This work is expected to be complete in early September.

Grange Avenue: Beginning today, Grange Avenue will be closed between 11th and 12th streets to allow crews to complete storm drainage and concrete surface repairs. Traffic will be detoured to West Avenue during this work. This work is expected to be complete in one to two weeks.

Grange Avenue: Beginning on Tuesday, Grange Avenue will be closed between 27th and 28th streets to allow crews to mill and overlay the roadway. This work is expected to be complete by the end of the week.

10th Street: Beginning on Tuesday, the eastbound right turn lane on 10th Street will be closed between Lowell and Conklin avenues to allow crews to perform a concrete repair. This work is expected to be complete in about one week.
