Road Report: June 8, 2026
Construction season is here, so we’re back with our weekly look at what projects are done, where you’ll find traffic impacts and what’s scheduled next.
What’s underway
Marion Road: Construction continues on Marion Road between Memory Lane and 84th Street North/259th Street.

The contractor has completed several initial project activities, including topsoil removal, site preparation and utility work.

Installation of the water main is nearly complete, and construction of aggregate piers is underway. Aggregate piers are columns of densely compacted stone that are used to strengthen weak soils.

These piers will provide the necessary support for the future roadway embankment, which will raise Marion Road to accommodate a new bridge over the BNSF Railway tracks.

In addition, the contractor is installing piling adjacent to the railroad corridor to help support loads from the tracks during construction.

Marion Road remains closed between Memory Lane and 84th Street North/259th Street while work progresses. Construction is anticipated to be completed in late 2027.
12th Street: The contractor is making good progress on the 12th Street bridge preservation project.

The two exterior lanes have been completed, and on June 1, traffic was shifted onto the newly completed lanes. For the next couple of weeks, one lane in each direction will remain open while work continues on the remaining portions of the bridge.

The contractor will complete concrete bridge deck repairs, followed by the application of a polymer chip seal.

The polymer chip seal provides a durable, waterproof surface that helps protect the bridge deck from moisture and deicing chemicals, extending the life of the structure and reducing future maintenance needs. Once the chip seal has been installed, the contractor will replace the bridge seals at each end of the structure and install permanent pavement markings. Work remains on schedule for completion in late June or early July.
I-29 & 85th: Work continues on the new interchange at Interstate 29 and 85th Street, and the site is beginning to take shape as several key elements become visible.

The pedestrian underpass has been completed, and geofoam — a lightweight fill material — has been installed over the water main.

The contractor is installing piling that will support the bridge piers for the 85th Street bridge.

Grading work continues on the ramps, and installation of the water main on the west side of the interstate is expected to begin within the next couple of weeks.

Construction on this project is anticipated to be completed in late 2027.

Cliff Avenue: Northbound traffic on Cliff Avenue was reduced to one lane at 20th Street on Wednesday to allow construction crews to perform underground utility work. The outside northbound lane will be closed to allow the contractor to bore electrical conduit beneath Cliff to connect new street lighting along 20th. This lane reduction is anticipated to remain in place for approximately two weeks.
19th Street: Nineteenth Street from Fifth to Sixth avenues closed on Wednesday to allow the contractor to tap into water and sewer main. The south sidewalk will be closed; pedestrian traffic will be detoured to the north sidewalk. This work is anticipated to be completed by the end of the day on Tuesday.
121th & Mable: The intersection of 12th Street and Mable Avenue closed on Wednesday to allow crews to perform curb ramp repairs. Motorists are being detoured to 11th Street. Pedestrians can use either 11th or 13th streets. This work is anticipated to be completed in three to four weeks.
Minnesota Avenue: Traffic transitioned to the east two lanes of Minnesota Avenue from Second to Fourth streets on Thursday to allow construction crews to start work on the west side of Minnesota, which will include pavement removals, replacement of 36-inch diameter water main, storm drainage installation, new concrete pavement with center median, traffic signals, enhanced street lighting and streetscaping. The left turn movements will continue to be restricted through the construction zone. All lanes are expected to be open to traffic in November.
Minnesota Avenue: The outside southbound lane of Minnesota Avenue between 14th street and north of the railroad tracks closed on Thursday to allow the contractor to complete concrete repairs. This work is anticipated to be completed in one week.
What’s next
Silver Valley: Beginning today, Silver Valley Drive will be closed to eastbound traffic between Snyder Circle and Marion Road to allow crews to make storm drainage repairs. Single-lane westbound traffic will remain open. Eastbound traffic will be detoured at Severn Lane to Coughran Court, then to 26th Street. The recreational trail in Dunham Park along Silver Valley Drive also will be closed. Pedestrians are urged to follow the posted detour through the park. This work is anticipated to be completed in five weeks.
Russell Street: Beginning today, the outside eastbound lanes of Russell Street will be closed between Minnesota and Main avenues to allow construction crews to perform concrete repairs, curb and gutter repairs, and joint resealing. There will be one lane of traffic maintained in each direction in the westbound lanes. In the upcoming weeks, the location of the lane closures at the intersections will vary. At a minimum, one lane of traffic in each direction will always remain open. Access to businesses, homes and side streets will be maintained. The work in this area is anticipated to be completed in early July, and work on Russell Street will be ongoing through October.
Audie Drive: Beginning today, Audie Drive will be closed on the south side of the intersection at Laquinta Street to allow crews to perform repairs on the concrete valley gutter. Motorists should use 77th Street to enter and exit the neighborhood. This work is anticipated to be completed in one week.
41st Street: Beginning at 8:30 a.m. today, the westbound traffic on 41st Street will be restricted to one lane from Louise Avenue to Interstate 29. Alternate routes to consider are 49th Street, Louise Avenue and 26th Street corridors. The north sidewalk will be closed from Shirley Avenue to I-29. Pedestrian traffic will be detoured to the south sidewalk along 41st. The contractor will be doing water utility work. This work is anticipated to be completed by the end of the day on June 15.
Algonquin Street: Beginning at 8:30 a.m. today, Algonquin Street will be closed from A Avenue to the intersection of Industrial Avenue and Blackhawk Street to allow the contractor to do crane work. The sidewalk on Algonquin will be closed between Pass and A Avenue. This work is anticipated to be completed the end of the day on Wednesday.
National Avenue: Beginning at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, National Avenue will be closed between 57th Street North and 60th Street North to allow the contractor to install underground utilities. This work is anticipated to be completed by the end of the day on June 16.
I-229: Beginning on Thursday, exit ramp closures on Interstate 229 will begin at the Western Avenue northbound off-ramp and at I-229 to Minnehaha County Road 125/476th Avenue. The closures are expected to be in place for eight days. The project includes milling existing surface, concrete patch repairs, asphalt overlay, saw-and-seal joint work and temporary pavement markings. Commuters are encouraged to use alternate routes. The prime contractor for this $2.2 million project is Journey Group of Sioux Falls. The overall project completion date is Oct. 16.
