Road Report: May 25, 2026
Construction season is here, so we’re back with our weekly look at what projects are done, where you’ll find traffic impacts and what’s scheduled next.
What’s underway
Russell Street: The outside and center westbound lanes of Russell Street closed between Minnesota and West avenues on May 20 to allow crews to perform concrete repairs, curb and gutter repairs, and joint resealing.

One lane of traffic will be maintained in the inside westbound lane. In the upcoming weeks, the location of the lane closure on westbound Russell Street will vary.
At a minimum, one westbound lane of traffic will remain open at all times. Access to businesses, homes and side streets will be maintained. The work in this area is anticipated to be complete in early July.
Work on Russell Street between Minnesota and Louise avenues will be ongoing through October.
Arrowhead & Veterans: Arrowhead Parkway reopened to traffic east of Veterans Parkway on May 21.

Traffic on Veterans Parkway was switched over to the newly constructed concrete pavement on the east side of the intersection on Thursday as well. Arrowhead Parkway is now closed between Highline Avenue and Veterans Parkway to allow crews to reconstruct the west half of the project. Motorists should utilize Veterans Parkway, Six Mile Road or Sycamore Avenue to either Madison, Sixth, 26th or 41st streets as alternate routes around the closure on Arrowhead Parkway. The remaining work on Arrowhead is expected to be complete later this fall.
Veterans Parkway: Crews are making good progress on the concrete repairs on Veterans Parkway between 26th and 41st streets.

The concrete work should be wrapping up within the next two to three weeks.

After that, crews will remove the existing joint sealant, apply penetrating sealer to the pavement joints and then apply new hot-pour joint sealant.

These are preventative maintenance measures to prevent water and incompressible material from getting into the pavement joints, which causes issues during freeze-thaw cycles over time.

Performing these types of preventative maintenance projects are a cost-effective way to extend the life of the streets and help keep good streets in good condition.

Cliff & I-229: Crews also are making good progress at the Cliff Avenue and Interstate 229 interchange.

The old northbound interstate pavement and bridge have been removed, grading work on the interstate and for the new northbound bridge is in progress, and some preparatory work for some retaining walls and for the new bridge has taken place.

Beginning on May 29, traffic on Cliff Avenue at the I-229 interchange will be switched from the center two lanes to the east side of the street.

Left turns will no longer be allowed from the southbound I-229 off-ramp onto southbound Cliff Avenue. Right turns onto northbound Cliff will still be allowed.

Then on June 8, Cliff will be fully closed to all traffic between the Spencer Park access road and the southbound I-229 ramp to allow crews to install underground utilities.

This full closure is expected to last for about one week. Cliff Avenue then will reopen to one lane of traffic in each direction for the remainder of the project.

Work on this project is expected to be substantially complete and all lanes open to traffic by late fall. Final cleanup and restoration work will take place in the spring of 2027.
Minnesota Avenue: The inside northbound lane of Minnesota Avenue closed between 69th street and Laquinta Circle on May 22 to allow crews to complete concrete repairs. This work is expected to be complete in about one week.
What’s next
Ellis Road: Beginning today, there will be daytime lane closures on Ellis Road at 46th Street. Flaggers will be present to direct traffic through the lane closure. These daytime lane closures are a part of the roadway and utility improvements on 46th from Ellis Road to Klein Avenue. These closures are expected to be complete in about two weeks.
Southeastern Avenue: Beginning today, Southeastern Avenue will be closed from Bison Trail to 85th Street to allow crews to pave the intersection of Southeastern and Veterans Parkway. A signed detour will direct traffic to Cliff Avenue and Highway 11. This work is expected to be complete later this summer.
Main Avenue: Beginning today, Main Avenue will be restricted to one lane of southbound traffic from 10th to 11th streets to allow crews to work on improvements to an adjacent building. The east sidewalk also will be closed, and pedestrian traffic will be detoured to the west sidewalk. This work is expected to be complete in about one week.
Cliff Avenue: Beginning today, Cliff Avenue will be restricted to one lane of southbound traffic from Mulberry Street through the intersection of Rice Street extending to the railroad tracks to allow crews to perform electrical work. This work is expected to be complete in about three days.
Oxbow Avenue: Beginning today, Oxbow Avenue will be closed between 57th Street and Cottonwood Place to allow crews to install utilities. Vehicle traffic will be detoured to Louise Avenue at 49th and 57th streets. The west sidewalk of Oxbow also will be closed. Pedestrian traffic will be detoured to the west onto Tennis Lane. This work is expected to be complete in about two weeks.
Eighth and Weber: Beginning today, the intersection of Eighth Street and Weber Avenue will be closed to allow crews to make improvements for a future whistle-reduction zone through the downtown area. Vehicle traffic on Eighth Street will be detoured to Sixth Street at Phillips and Cliff avenues. Pedestrian traffic will be maintained through the project on a temporary pedestrian access route. This work is expected to be complete in late July or early August. After this project is complete, it will allow the city to request certification from BNSF Railway for a quiet zone designation. This designation would allow train engineers to stop routinely sounding horns at public crossings. However, if the area is designated as a quiet zone, train horns still may be used in emergency situations or to comply with federal regulations and railroad operating rules.
Highway 11: Beginning on June 1, Highway 11 will be closed from just north of 257th Street to 258th Street near Corson to allow crews to reconstruct the highway. The intersection of Highway 11 and 258th Street will remain open. This closure is expected to remain in place until the summer of 2027.
