Dec. 29-30: Butterflies

To celebrate its 20th anniversary, the Butterfly House & Aquarium is offering all-day games Thursday and Friday. That includes a shake-a-day dice roll for discounted admission, trivia from 2002, Elf on the Shelf hide-and-seek, I Spy a Butterfly to find a white tag for a prize and a coloring station that encourages coloring outside the lines. Admission rates from 2002 will be charged from 10 a.m. to noon Friday. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Dec. 30: Noon concert

Guitarist and singer/songwriter Billy Lurken of Mitchell will perform at the Winter Concert Series at the Old Courthouse Museum, 200 W. Sixth St. The music will begin at noon Friday.

Dec. 31: Dance, dance, dance

Blast off into 2023 with Jayne and Full Blast Dance playing the “Best of 2022” playlist. The moves are low-impact but high-energy and totally fun. The event is 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday at Morningside Community Center, 2400 S. Bahnson Ave.
Registration is required.

Dec. 31: Balloon drop

Forget the ball drop. Kids can watch the balloons drop at a Noon Year’s Eve celebration at the Washington Pavilion. It begins at noon Saturday. Radley Rex will be there as hundreds of balloons fall to the ground in the Kirby Science Discovery Center.

Jan. 1: First Day Hike

Celebrate the first day of 2023 Sunday with a quick trip to Good Earth State Park for a 1-mile hike surrounded by winter’s beauty. It begins at 2 p.m. Meet at the picnic shelter. Dress for the weather — and if that weather is below zero, the hike will be canceled. A park license is required.

Jan. 3: Checkmate

Made a new year’s resolution to play more chess? The 46th Street Chess Club will offer an evening of chess from 5 to 10 p.m. Tuesday in Room 204 of the Center for Active Generations, 2300 W. 46th St. The main activity is from 6 to 9 p.m.
