Road Report: June 22, 2026
Construction season is here, so we’re back with our weekly look at what projects are done, where you’ll find traffic impacts and what’s scheduled next.
What’s done
41st Street: A short bridge maintenance project on 41st Street between Westport and Kiwanis avenues started and finished last week.

This project applied a “healer/sealer” to the cracks on the bridge deck to prevent debris and surface water from further damaging the concrete.

This preventative maintenance work will extend the time before more extensive bridge deck repairs are required.

What’s underway
69th Street: A short street maintenance project started last week and will wrap up today or Tuesday on 69th Street between Louise Avenue and Landau Circle.

Crews milled off the top 2 inches of the old asphalt surface and applied a new 2-inch later of asphalt to provide a smoother ride for motorists and extend the overall life of the street.

The pavement striping will occur early this week.

Eighth & Weber: Work is underway to reconstruct the intersection of Eighth Street and Weber Avenue downtown.

Work on this project includes new concrete street surfacing, a mid-block pedestrian crossing, railroad signal improvements and railroad crossing arms.

Storm drainage work, grading and concrete work are in progress east of the railroad tracks. Vehicle traffic is being detoured to Sixth Street, but pedestrian traffic is being maintained through the project.

The city portion of this work is expected to be complete in late July or early August. BNSF Railway will do the signal crossing work later this fall.

After this project is complete, it will allow the city to request certification from BNSF Railway for a quiet zone designation.

If approved, this designation would allow train engineers to stop routinely sounding horns at public crossings. However, if designated as a quiet zone, train horns may still be used in emergency situations or to comply with federal regulations and railroad operating rules.
Veterans Parkway: The outside northbound lane of Veterans Parkway closed between Paddington and Maple streets on June 17 to allow crews to complete concrete repairs. This work is expected to be complete in about one week.
Cliff Avenue: The outside southbound lane of Cliff Avenue closed between 77th Street and Veterans Parkway on June 19 to allow crews to install underground utilities. The west sidewalk also is closed as part of this work. Pedestrian traffic is being detoured to the east sidewalk. This work is expected to be complete in about one week.
What’s next
49th Street: Beginning today, 49th Street will be closed between Terry and Solberg avenues to allow crews to perform bridge maintenance and repair work. Motorists should use 41st or 57th streets as alternate routes. This work is expected to be complete in two to three months.
Sycamore Avenue: Beginning today, the outside southbound lane of Sycamore Avenue will be closed between 23rd and 26th streets to allow crews to perform driveway approach repairs. This work is expected to be complete in about one week.
Sycamore Avenue: Beginning today, the southbound lanes of Sycamore Avenue will be closed from 57th to 69th streets to allow crews to begin crack sealing. The work originally was scheduled to begin on June 15.Once repairs are completed in the southbound lanes, work will shift to the northbound lanes of Sycamore. One lane of traffic will be maintained in each direction at all times. This work is expected to be complete in about one week.
Kiwanis Avenue: Beginning on Tuesday, the outside northbound lane of Kiwanis Avenue will be closed between Eighth and Ninth streets to allow crews to perform accessible curb ramp repairs. The sidewalk on the east side of Kiwanis also will be closed during this work. Pedestrian traffic will be detoured around the work zone. This work is expected to be complete in about one week.
Kiwanis Avenue: Beginning on Tuesday, Kiwanis Avenue will be closed between Sheldon Lane and 46th Street to allow crews to perform storm drainage repairs. The recreational trail on the west side of Kiwanis also will be closed. Both vehicle and pedestrian traffic will be detoured to Western Avenue. This work is expected to be complete in about two weeks.
20th & Ninth: Beginning on Tuesday, the intersection of 20th Street and Ninth Avenue will be closed to allow crews to continue with the reconstruction of 20th through the Avera McKennan campus. One lane of traffic in each direction will be maintained on 20th from Cliff Avenue west and from Seventh Avenue east, both dead-ending near Ninth Avenue. Through traffic should utilize 17th or 26th streets as alternate routes. Access to the Avera parking ramps along 20th will be from Cliff. Access to Sioux Falls Specialty Hospital and Avera Plaza 4 will be from Seventh. Access to the Avera McKennan Emergency Department is not impacted, but motorists should use either 17th or 26th streets to access the Emergency Department entrance off of Seventh. All work on this project is expected to be complete in November.
41st & Louise: Beginning on Wednesday, there will be daytime lane closures in place in the vicinity of 41st Street and Louise Avenue to allow crews to perform underground utility exploration ahead of a future reconstruction project at this intersection. These daytime lane closures will be in place every weekday from 6 to 7:30 a.m., and again from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. until mid-July.
I-90 project open house: The South Dakota Department of Transportation will hold a public meeting open house from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday to inform area residents of the proposed Interstate 90 grading, surfacing and structure replacement project in Sioux Falls. The proposed I-90 project runs from Interstate 29 to Cliff Avenue and east of Interstate 229. The public meeting open house will be held at the Special Olympics South Dakota Unify Center located at 800 E. I-90 Lane in Sioux Falls. The public meeting open house will be informal, allowing for one-on-one discussions with design staff. A short presentation will take place after 5:30 p.m.
