What are the Seven Wonders of Sioux Falls? They want to know

The rest of the sentence is the inspiration for a Facebook quest this summer to determine what the public believes are the “Seven Wonders of Sioux Falls.”

It began with Greg LaFollette, who had seen a few posts from other places for “Seven Wonders of …… ?”

“(I) started thinking about our amazing town and how we might manage to crowdsource such a list.”

He figured the  Facebook group titled “You know you’re from Sioux Falls/Brandon if…..” might be a good starting point.

“And it generated a lot of conversation. Mostly positive, some not so much,” he said.

He started the group off with a list to consider:

• Falls Park
• Washington Pavilion
• St. Joseph Cathedral
• McKennan Park
• Citywide recreation trail
• Historic downtown
• Sanford Sports Complex

Among the more than 300 comments were more suggestions, including the Japanese Gardens at Terrace Park, Veterans’ Memorial Park and the State Theatre.

“A huge thank you to everyone who responded,” one woman wrote. “I am fairly new to SF. We are hosting several couples in a few weeks, and I read every entry and now have an abundance of things to explore. What a great city to live in.”

But then LaFollette’s friend Joe Kirby took it a step more and set up a voting microsite. Kirby, a proponent of ranked choice voting, thought it would lend some legitimacy both to the list and the process of ranked choice voting, which involves allowing voters to rank their choices by preference.

“And we both posted it where we could,” LaFollette said.

“It started many positive conversations and lots of people used RCV without even knowing it!”
