Walk like a penguin to avoid winter slips

With the first few inches of snow — and ice — greeting us this winter, it’s time to talk about winter slips.

It’s easy to overlook a change in conditions that quickly occurs as we get snow, freezing rain or a drop in temperature. And sometimes we just don’t think before we start walking.

Most slips and falls happen on surfaces folks imagine are just fine, and before you know it, you’re heading to a walk-in clinic or emergency department for an injury. Black ice can form on paths and walkways, and it’s tricky to see.

Our team of physical therapists at Avera Therapy have these tips for good form:

  • Walk slowly and point your toes out slightly, taking small steps. This is often called “walking like a penguin.”
  • Keep your head up, and don’t lean forward too much. Have you ever seen a penguin fall? It’s because they apply the rules of balance.
  • Keep your hands out of your pockets, too, because this will help you keep your balance.
  • Keep your feet flat, and take small steps.
  • Make sure you have shoes with good traction when you go out in slippery or snowy conditions.
  • Allow yourself more time to walk from place to place.
  • Look for the sand or salt on the sidewalk, and follow those paths.
