5 ways to slow down summer at Great Bear
This piece is sponsored by Great Bear Ski Valley.
Every spring, we all look forward to the relaxation summer promises. But then, schedules fill up. Between youth sports and family vacations, you blink and it’s already back to school.
Here are five ways to slow down summer at Great Bear Ski Valley.
1. Chill at the Hill Series
The last Wednesday of each month through September, stop by for Chill at the Hill from 5 to 8 p.m.

Each evening features a local musician and food truck, and the lounge is open to grab a cold beer, glass of wine or smoothie.
- July 30: Backyard BBQ and musical guest Todd Casilli.
- Aug. 27 – Marc O’s Festival Foods and musical guest Zon Tran.
- Sept. 24 – Ollies and musical guest Todd Casilli.
2. Hiking, running
The park is home to more than 4 miles of hiking trails open from dawn to dusk free of charge, with bike trails coming soon. Go on a leisurely walk through the bur oak forest.

Dogs are welcome! Or challenge yourself, and go for a run. Climb the hill for a great workout!
3. Trailgating Festival
Get your game face on for the Sioux Falls Parks & Recreation’s annual Trailgating Festival on Aug. 15.
Enjoy classic yard games, a bouncy obstacle course, field goal challenge, nature-themed photo scavenger hunt and creative crafts! Relax at the lodge with food and drinks, gather around the campfire for s’mores, and unwind to live music.

Feeling competitive? Enter the cornhole tournament for those 18 and older. Registration starts at 6 p.m., tournament at 6:30 p.m.
4. Wildlife watching
Great Bear is home to all kinds of wildlife. Keep your eyes open and maybe you’ll spot a deer or bald eagle. Take along the Southeast South Dakota Birding Trail guide. Don’t forget to stop and watch the sunset from the top of the ski hill overlooking Sioux Falls.
5. Have a picnic
Escape the hustle and bustle for a few hours with family and friends. Unplug and relax on a picnic blanket.

Located just a few minutes from downtown, Great Bear offers a quick escape from the city. As you turn off Rice Street, you’re immediately surrounded by lush green hills, and the stress just falls away.
