Oct. 7: Pumpkin Day at Lake Lorraine Farmers Market

The Lake Lorraine Farmers Market is hosting Pumpkin Day, with lots of fun available and free pumpkins. Pumpkin Day will take place at the same time as the regular farmers market – 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. – and will include activities such as pumpkin decorating, live music and beverages from Rainy Day Coffee Co. The market is on the east side of the Lake Lorraine development in the parking lot south of Hobby Lobby.

Oct. 7: Fjall Fest at the Great Outdoor Store

Want a one-of-a-kind backpack? Head to Fjall Host Fest at the Great Outdoor Store. The event will feature hand-painted Fjallraven Kanken backpacks, traditional Swedish food and the opportunity to wax a Fjallraven piece at the waxing station. You’ll be able to bid on your favorite bags, which all have the theme “Youthful Adventure,” and all proceeds will go to Leif Ericson Day Camp. Fjall Host Fest will begin at 5 p.m. and end at 8 p.m.

Oct. 8-9: Junkin’ Market Day 

Junkin’ Market Days will offer an indoor market full of “repurposed, rustic, shabby chic and one-of-a-kind” finds. Founder Kerry Bamsey hand-selects vendors. If you’re looking to buy handmade items for the holiday season or just to support small businesses, Junkin’ Market Days is the perfect place. Hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday in the Expo Building at the W.H Lyon Fairgrounds. Admission is $5 per person.

Oct. 8: Teen Open Mic Night 

Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation is hosting a free Teen Open Mic Night at Morningside Community Center. If you have a talent of any kind, whether it be singing, instrumental, dance or even stand-up comedy, this is your chance to show it off. While the event is open to the public, registration is required for those wishing to perform. Doors will open at 6 p.m., and the event will start at 6:30 p.m. Registration can be completed at register.siouxfallsparks.org. Refreshments will be provided. 

Oct. 9-10: Dakota Independent Film Festival

If you’re looking to see a variety of independent films, head to the Dakota Independent Film Festival at the State Theatre. Offerings range from narrative and documentary shorts to feature films. There will be panel sessions throughout the festival. Tickets can be purchased as day and weekend passes or for single sessions at siouxfallsstatetheatre.org.

Oct. 9: Strawbale Winery Harvest Festival

Strawbale Winery near Renner will be hosting a Harvest Festival from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Oct. 9: Exploration of Cultures 

The Music Collective is having its inaugural fundraiser, Exploration of Cultures, at the J&L Harley-Davidson Event Center. The fundraiser will go toward scholarships for students at Augustana University and programming for diversity and artistry in music. Performances include dancers, violinists and cellists. Tickets are $45, and catering will be provided by Sanaa’s, Lalibela, Pad Thai and more. Cocktail hour begins at 6:30 p.m., and the program begins at 7:30 p.m.

Oct. 10: Sunrise Migration Walk

October is one of the best times for birdwatching in eastern South Dakota, and Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation will be having a Sunrise Migration Walk to show off the thousands of birds that pass through South Dakota on their way south. The walk will begin at 7:30 a.m. at Leaders Park and will go until 8:30 a.m. Registration is required and costs $4.69. Bring a water bottle, good walking shoes and binoculars. Oct. 11: Flannel Fest at PAve

Ready to really get into the fall spirit this weekend? Put on your finest flannel and head to PAve. The evening will be filled with live music from Juke the Tiger, Neon Horizon and Tuff Roots. Get half-price drinks all day. Music begins at 6 p.m. on the second floor of PAve. You must be 21 or older to enter.
