The week ahead: Dec. 19-23
The Week Ahead is our hand-picked event guide to the next seven days in Sioux Falls and slightly beyond. For guaranteed placement or to promote your event ahead of time, email [email protected] about a featured event listing.
Dec. 19: Beer and carols
Beer & Hymns and WestSide Lutheran are hosting a night of jubilant singing to enhance the Christmas spirit. All are welcome, and no singing experience is required. But you must be 21 or older to consume the beer. It will run from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at WoodGrain Brewing Co., 101 S. Phillips Ave. Donations collected that night will support Shepherd’s Table.

Dec. 20: Upcycling books
Is 2025 the year you’ve decided to write it all down? You can do so in your own “junk journal” by visiting SuFu Creative in Nordic Hall, 218 W. 13th St., from noon to 7 p.m. Friday. The pages and bindings of used hardcover books will be turned into works of art. Bring your own supplies, or use theirs. This is a drop-in event for all ages. A $5 donation for supplies is requested.

Dec. 20: The Toast
The Toast, a wedding and event band from Omaha, will travel north on Interstate 29 on Friday for two shows at Trio Jazz Club, 340 S. Main Ave. The first show will begin at 6:30 p.m., with the second starting at 9 p.m. There is a $10 cover charge.

Dec. 20: Crabgrass Crew
The Crabgrass Crew, an acoustic bluegrass band from Sioux Falls, has been performing for almost 40 years. You can catch them at 8:30 p.m. Friday at Christmas at Ken’s Korner, 918 W. Sixth St. It’s a free live show.

Dec. 21: Winter hike
Celebrate the shortest day of the year and welcome the sun’s — eventual — return with a 1-mile hike that will offer time for reflection as well as learning about ways people in the past celebrated. It will begin at 7 p.m. Saturday at Good Earth State Park at Blood Run, 46924 480th Ave. Be sure to dress for the weather with warm layers and good hiking shoes or boots. If the temperature with windchill is 0 degrees or below, the hike will be canceled.

Dec. 22: Luminary Lane
It’s that time of year when once again the Park Ridge neighborhood in Sioux Falls will line its streets with the glow of luminaries. From 5 to 10 p.m. Sunday, you can drive or walk though one of the city’s oldest Christmas traditions. Luminaries will be lighted in the area from Glendale to Park avenues and from 22nd to 26th streets.
