Oct. 21: Paint the Plow display

The city of Sioux Falls Street Division will host the 14th annual Paint the Plow event from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Levitt at the Falls, 504 N. Phillips Ave. Paint the Plow is an annual program that invites Sioux Falls students to paint a city plow; those plows then are displayed at the Paint the Plow event and used all winter to help clear streets. Paint the Plow attendees can vote on their favorite plows, and the winning plows will participate in the Downtown Sioux Falls Parade of Lights on Nov. 24. Paint the Plow student attendees who add their name to a drawing could have a chance to win a ride to school in a plow. Paint the Plow is free and open to the public.

Oct. 21: Art exhibit

To challenge stereotypes and reshape perceptions, an art show titled “REFOCUS” will take place from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday at Monick Yards, 605 E. Eighth St. The event is the collaboration between two community nonprofits, Rare by Design and Untitled.10. The exhibit will showcase the work of lead artist and photographer Hollie Leggett, who captures individuals with visible disabilities in an uplifting light. The exhibit’s mission is to bridge the gap between initial perceptions and the rich human experiences that lie beneath visible disabilities. The celebration of community, inclusivity and artistry is free.

Oct. 21: Asian horror stories

Curious Music Collective, DaDa Gastropub and Traesha Carlisle will host a PG-13 Halloween event with live music, Asian horror stories and spooky snacks and drinks at 9 p.m. Saturday at the DaDa Gastropub. The doors open at 9 p.m., with the event running from 9:30 to 10:30 p.m. Tickets cost $30. Curious Music Collective will share several horror stories from different Asian cultures. Lawrence Diggs will be the storyteller with music by Yi-Chun Lin on violin and viola, Kuan-Ting Chang on keyboard, Beverly Gibson on clarinet and saxophone, and Dana LeVan on percussion. Two special mystery “horror snacks” and a “horror drink,” which can be nonalcoholic for those younger than 21, will be included.

Oct. 21: Halloween at Lake Lorraine

Trick-or-treat with characters and take photos along the Lake Walk at Lake Lorraine from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday. Everything takes place on the Lake Walk on the west side of Lake Lorraine. Park in the Carsforsale.com parking lot and then head to the north to enter the Lake Walk path.

What you’ll see:

  • Fun characters and mascots.
  • Candy stations and other goodies from Lake Lorraine businesses and community businesses/organizations.
  • Photo opportunities along the way.
  • Costume paddle and rentals with Flow and Paddle from noon to 4 p.m. on the lake.

Be sure to come in costume and bring a treat bag to hold your goodies. Note that it is slightly cooler closer to the water so dress accordingly. Follow the Halloween at Lake Lorraine event here. In addition, Friessen Development Inc. and Lake Lorraine businesses are sponsoring a Haunted House Decorating Contest for homes across the Sioux Falls area. Enter by 5 p.m. Oct. 24.

Oct. 24: Beer choir

The Sioux Falls Beer Choir will begin singing for the second time since it was started at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at WoodGrain Brewing Co., 101 S. Phillips Ave. Grab a brew and come over to the lobby. No experience or music reading skills are necessary. The beer choir hymnal is printable; download volume 1 at this link. This is much more of a social event than a musical one. Come with your friends — even if they sing badly.

Oct. 24: Healthy Living

The Washington Pavilion will host the second event in its Healthy Living Series, which is focused on helping the community achieve long-term wellness. This month’s event will center around healthy stress management practices and how to implement them during the holiday season and beyond. The free event will take place at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in The WP at the Washington Pavilion. Dr. Dawn Flickema, an expert in family and integrative medicine, and certified health coach Becky Hanzen will draw on their expertise and the six pillars of healthy living to deliver practical advice. Space is limited. Reserve your spot online. For information, visit WashingtonPavilion.org/HealthyLiving.

Coming up: Nov. 2-4

Roosevelt High School Theatre will present the comedy whodunit, “Clue,” at 7 p.m. Nov. 2-4 and also at 2 p.m. Nov. 4. Tickets cost $5. Based on the 1985 Paramount movie, which was inspired by the Hasbro board game, Clue is a farce-meets-murder mystery. The tale begins at a remote mansion, where six mysterious guests assemble for an unusual dinner party where murder and blackmail are on the menu. When their host turns up dead, they all become suspects.
