May 1: May baskets

Celebrate spring by making a May Day basket from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Midco Aquatic Center. Children age 12 and younger must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. There will be food decorating and paper crafts. The event is free.

May 2: Spring Art & Wine Walk

Friday means an evening of art and wine throughout downtown Sioux Falls from 5 to 8 p.m. It will include a street closure along Phillips Avenue between Ninth and 10th streets to further encourage shopping, strolling and interacting with artists and entertainers. Visit here for details.

May 3: Free comic books

The new Izzi’s Gym, 807 N. Lake Ave., is participating in Free Comic Book Day starting at 10 a.m. Saturday. It’s stocked with hundreds of free comics for the special event, designed for longtime fans of comic books or those just getting started.

May 3: Derby Day party

Talk Derby to Me, a party celebrating the Kentucky Derby, will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday at Alibi Bar & Grill, 7400 E. Oak Grove Trail. Come dressed in your favorite Kentucky Derby attire, and enjoy a mint julep and other drink specials. If you dress in derby attire, you’ll receive a free drink, plus there are prizes for the best outfits and hats — and a photo backdrop. Games will be played, and the race will be on.

May 4: Star Wars pub crawl

Sioux Falls Food Tours and SiouxperCon will host May the Fourth Be With You: A Star Wars Pub Crawl Adventure from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday — May 4th, of course. Tickets cost $75, or $60 without alcohol, and include five stops at downtown watering holes. Each stop will feature a specially crafted Star Wars-themed drink. The tour will end at Blarney Stone Pub, where light appetizers will be served. Prizes will be awarded for best costumes. Get your tickets here.

May 6: Teacher appreciation

Tuesday is Teacher Appreciation Day at Chick-fil-A at 4005 W. 41st St. Teachers can show their school staff ID from 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. and receive a free original or spicy chicken sandwich.
