June 14: Soccer party

DJ Entertainment will perform at Party off the Pitch, an event hosted by the South Dakota Youth Soccer Association from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Friday on Phillips Avenue between Ninth and 10th streets. There will be giveaways and contests, soccer pool/T-ball games, bean bags, Jenga and food trucks. Other downtown Sioux Falls activities will include soccer movies at the State Theatre, a live music performance at Levitt at the Falls, ax-throwing and breweries and wine shops for soccer parents.

June 14: Big band dance

Dip and swirl on the beautiful wood floor at the El Riad Shrine when the Ballroom Dance Club hosts a dance with big band music Saturday. A dance lesson will be offered at 6:45 p.m., and the band will play from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. Cost is $15 per person at the door or $7 with a student ID. A little dressing-up is recommended.

June 15: Juneteenth festivities

The Juneteenth Sioux Celebration will honor Chet Jones as the Freedom Walk’s grand marshal Saturday. The family-friendly event is dedicated to promoting and celebrating African American culture, history and achievements while advocating for social justice and equality locally. The annual walk will begin at 10 a.m. at the Arc of Dreams and will cover less than a mile. Other Juneteenth activities include entertainment, food trucks, a fashion show and more from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the parking lot at 8th & Railroad Center, 401 E. Eighth St. The day will end with special performances from Grammy-nominated poet Theresa Tha Songbird and Grammy Award-winner Cocoa Sarai. A California native, Jones was the only African American student enrolled at Northern State University when he arrived on campus in 1967. A wrestling and football champion in college, he was a wrestling official for more than 30 years and still officiates football and track events. A former member of the South Dakota Legislature, he also has been inducted in halls of fame at NSU and in California and South Dakota.

June 15: Learn to paddle

You can take to the water from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday when the Outdoor Campus hosts Super Saturday Paddling. The event will take place at Sertoma Park, 4500 S. Oxbow Ave. You’ll learn the basics of canoeing and kayaking. The open-house-styled program will provide all equipment. Youths must be with an adult and be at least 5 years old to canoe and 8 years old to kayak.

June 15: Fiber Arts Day

Knitters, crocheters, spinners, weavers, quilters, macrame artists, sewers, felters and embroiderers — well, you get the idea — are invited to the fourth annual Fiber Arts Day at The Retreat at Pointer’s Ridge, 47303 Big Sioux Road, south of Baltic. The event will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. A stash table will allow participants to sell, barter or trade, and there will be a show-and-tell after lunch. Click here for tickets.

June 15: Sun pour

Welcome summer with a free fiery, outdoor iron pour at BronzeAge Art Casting, 1110 N. Weber Ave., east of Falls Park. Bring a lawn chair. Drop by from 4 to 7 p.m. to design a mold for a cast iron tile, later filled with molten iron while you watch. Cost is $35 a tile with a limited supply of molds. Allow 45 to 90 minutes for the outdoor workshop. Nordic Iron leads this community event, which is held rain or shine. The Ice Cream Truck – SDSU Ice Cream will be on-site during the evening.
