The week ahead: July 24-30
The Week Ahead is our hand-picked event guide to the next seven days in Sioux Falls and slightly beyond. For guaranteed placement or to promote your event ahead of time, email [email protected] about a featured event listing.
July 24: Rock painting
Looking for a relaxing yet creative activity? Try rock painting at AMC Collective, 2119 S. Minnesota Ave., from noon to 6 p.m. Thursday. Choose from a variety of rocks in different shapes and sizes, then use acrylics, paint markers or marble-painting techniques to make your own design. A freewill donation will be taken. Can’t make it Thursday? You also can try it from noon to 6 p.m. Friday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday.

July 25: Funk-UH-Fried
Wileys Bar, 330 N. Main Ave., will bring the retro vibes of the Funk-UH-Fried band from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. Friday. Dance the night away with the best funk pop hits from the ’70s though the ’00s. There’s no cover charge, and there will be fishbowl drink specials.

July 26: Pick a bouquet
Create your own bouquet during a you-pick event from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Lavender Lane Flower Farm, 48186 258th St., north of Brandon. No appointment is necessary. For $30, you can fill a vase with flowers; vases are provided. Payment is by cash — exact amount please — Venmo or PayPal on the day of the event. Similar events will take place every Saturday through Sept. 27.

July 26: Watermelon Splash
If you could eat watermelons the way animals at the Great Plains Zoo do, well, you’d be awfully messy when you were done. See how much they enjoy it on Saturday with admission to the zoo. Watermelon for human guests will be served at 11:15 a.m. near the brown bear habitat. That’s followed by the brown bear keeper chat. There also will be a chat with a rhino keeper. Throughout the day, you can watch the zoo residents enjoy watermelon treats.

July 26: Classic cars
Expect to see hundreds of vehicles at the eighth annual Nyberg’s Ace Hot Classics Night from 4 to 10 p.m. Saturday at the downtown location. Local bands The Last Call and Surfin’ Safari will provide music, and there will be about 10 food trucks at the site. Show-car parking will begin at 2 p.m. This is a free event. If you’re coming to view the cars, parking is free in the ramp at 11th Street and First Avenue. Bring your own lawn chair.

July 27: Splash Pad Showdown
Get ready for the ultimate Splash Pad Showdown, designed for kids of all ages to play at Jacobson Plaza, 810 N. Phillips Ave. Sioux Falls Parks & Recreation will scatter extra water toys and beach balls at the splash pad. Hours are 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday. No registration is required.
