Jan. 10: heART of the City

heART of the City,  an art show that features 2d, 3D and wearable art created by local artists, will be open from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Friday at Whittier Middle School. Teams and individuals artists have turned found objects into artwork that captures this year’s theme: love. The free event is a collaboration between Whittier and The Little Stone Church, part of an ongoing effort to uplift and support teachers and students. Donations of money or individually packaged snacks will be accepted at the door.

Jan. 11: Make a planter

Farmhouse Market, 121 S. Franklin Ave., will host a workshop that means you’ll walk out with a marbled dip planter — and a plant. It will begin at 10:30 a.m. Saturday. Cost is $40 per person. Register by calling 605-366-9789 or stopping at the store.

Jan. 10: Sip + Shop + See

An open house will take place from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Friday at The District Lofts, 155 E. Fourth Place. Tour the downtown lofts while savoring a drink and snacks, and learn what Pasque Boutique and Alcove have to offer at The Steel District.

Jan. 10: Dance the night away

It’s not too late to welcome in the new year. The Ballroom Dance Club Sioux Falls and El Riad Dance Club will host live music Friday. A swing-dance lesson will begin at 6:45 p.m., with the band starting at 7:30 p.m. Dressy or business casual attire is recommended. Admission is $15 per person or $7 with a student ID.

Jan. 12: Root beer keg races

Calling all K9s! The third annual Sioux Falls Parks & Recreation K9 Root Beer Keg Races will begin with registration at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Spencer Dog Park, 3501 S. Cliff Ave. The races will begin at 2 p.m. No registration is required. Each participating dog will be categorized into a weight class and wear a harness attached to an appropriately sized root beer keg to pull past the finish line. Each dog will be timed, and the fastest dog in each class wins.

Jan. 14: Learn the latest

The Sioux Falls West Coast Swing Dance is holding a series of classes that offer contemporary West Coast swing moves at 7 p.m. Tuesdays at The Little Stone Church, 1001 E. Sixth St. You don’t need a partner; they’ll supply extra leads and follows. Classes continue each week into February, then you’ll join a flash mob on the town. Cost is $25 per person per month or $8 drop-in at the door. There’s a parking lot on the church’s south side.
