Flyboy also has a personal connection to the class of 2021.

With the addition of two new shops in the past year, the staff had to grow. In the past, the owners weren’t sure about hiring high school students. But they tried it out with family and a friend, and the results were immediate.

“Within a few days, they were better at running the drive-thru than me,” Duenwald said.

“We now have seven high school seniors working for us. It has been fun watching each student learn and develop the confidence it requires to work in a retail setting. Being a small, family-owned company, we have the ability to adapt roles related to student strengths whether it be running the drive-thru, contributing to our social media posts or helping develop new and fun donut offerings.”

Sending the graduates off after this summer will be bittersweet, he said.

“But we are lucky that a few are going to schools in this area and will still be able to continue working with us through college. Our current high school students have also been great ambassadors for recruiting new employees!”
