Surprising the principal, working out with the mayor, other school news you’ll love

What a cool way to celebrate! Susan Foster, principal at Fred Assam Elementary, marked a milestone birthday this week. But the sign wasn’t the only surprise. She was told to be at school by 5:30 a.m.

“I had no idea I would be going for a hot air balloon ride!!” she posted on Facebook. “We enjoyed an aerial view from Fred Assam Elementary to the Sioux Falls airport. What an amazing experience!”

Kids at St. Lambert Elementary got to work out with Mayor Paul TenHaken last week. The whole school hit the playground to get exercise and celebrate with popsicles. The event was part of a package won at a school district fundraiser.

Nice work, Harvey Dunn Elementary students! They read over 1 million pages this school year. The fifth grade student organizer, along with help from peers, counted the pages, and students celebrated with B&G Milkyway ice cream.

The class of 2022 at Sioux Falls Lutheran broke ground on the new high school wing this week. The first phase of the addition will provide four classrooms, a staff room and a learning center for high school students by fall 2021.

Great field trip! St. Mary Elementary fourth graders experienced life on the prairie while visiting the Laura Ingalls Wilder homestead and getting a glimpse into the books firsthand.

And finally, we thought this seemed like a pretty great day at school. Sioux Falls Christian’s senior plant class spent a morning at Glean For Good foraging wild edibles and exploring the perennial garden and food forest. And, of course, meeting the resident animals.
