School news of the week: Student mentors, long-awaited curtain call, acts of kindness

What a great partnership between George McGovern Middle School and Jefferson High School. The JHS mentor program connects 11th grade mentors with eighth grade GMMS mentees, which offers future Cavs an opportunity to have a connection with an upperclassmen when they begin their freshmen year. Mentors play games, help with homework and even enjoy ice cream with their mentee. Thanks to the B&G Milkyway on 12th Street for providing treats!

Talk about a curtain call a long time coming. For three years, the stage has been dark at Eugene Field Elementary — but not anymore. Congrats to the cast of “Aladdin Jr.”

Speaking of a show, it was a memorable “May the Fourth be with you” at Oscar Howe Elementary thanks to the fifth grade band.

And that is an adorable Princess Leia at Garfield Elementary, where they marked May 4 with Star Wars treats and T-shirts.

Now this is a school lunch! The staff members at Lowell Elementary were surprised with a charcuterie board from Cultivated in Love, donated by a Lowell family.

This beautiful display was a way to say thanks to some true VIPs in a school: the lunch ladies. They celebrated Lunch Lady Super Hero Day at Fred Assam Elementary.

Congratulations and thank you for so many years of service to all those in education retiring this year. We especially liked this group photo from Patrick Henry Middle School.
