Sioux Falls pools open Friday, with new additions ahead
Outdoor swim season arrives Friday in Sioux Falls with the opening of seven outdoor pools and splash pads.
The city Parks & Recreation Department opens outdoor aquatic facilities at 1 p.m. Friday. They will operate alongside the Midco Aquatic Center and the Westside Recreation Center, which offer indoor aquatic opportunities year-round.

“Our outdoor aquatic facilities help make summer fun in Sioux Falls because they’re a great way to stay active, cool down and enjoy the outdoors,” said Jackie Nelson, recreation manager for Sioux Falls Parks & Recreation. “We are incredibly excited about the new addition of the T. Denny Sanford Splash Pad to our park system later this summer. When Jacobson Plaza opens in July, it will feature the T. Denny Sanford Splash Pad, which will be the largest in Sioux Falls.”

Open swim at outdoor aquatic facilities is from 1 to 5 p.m. and 6:30 to 8 p.m. daily.
The McKennan Park Wading Pool is closed for the 2025 summer swim season because the more than 50-year-old pool is being replaced with a modern wading pool and bathhouse. It will reopen in 2026.
The renovation project will include a new bathhouse and a reimagined wading pool with a zero-depth entry and spray features. The plans also include shade structures and new landscaping.

A donation from Pierce and Barbara McDowell will help fund some of the enhancements, including an expanded concessions area, architectural elements to the bathhouse, the shade structures, additional spray features in the pool and a variety of park amenities such as planters, benches and a sculpture that will recognize Helen McKennan, who donated the parkland in 1906.
Swimmers can pay daily admission, or buy or renew swim passes. They can be used at any of the following aquatic facilities:
- Drake Springs Family Aquatic Center, 301 S. Fairfax Ave.
- Frank Olson Pool, 4101 E. 16th St.
- Kuehn Park Pool, 2309 Kuehn Park Road.
- Laurel Oak Family Aquatic Center, 3401 E. 49th St.
- Midco Aquatic Center, 1601 S. Western Ave.
- Terrace Park Family Aquatic Center, 1001 W. Madison Ave.
Splash pads are free and open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. during the summer season:
- Hayward Park Splash Pad, 400 N. Valley View Road.
- Pioneer Spray Park, Pine Street and Jessica Avenue.
- T. Denny Sanford Splash Pad at Jacobson Plaza, 810 North Phillips Avenue — opens in July.
Residents can search for all open aquatic facilities and splash pads using the Park Finder Map.
