School news you’ll love: New addition, inaugural winter guard, game-playing principal

First Lutheran Church has a great partnership with Lowell Elementary, and here’s the most recent example of it: a book vending machine. When staff and students see kids going above and beyond with behavior and academics, they receive a gold coin that can be redeemed for a book to celebrate those “golden moments.”

This is the first year Lincoln High School fielded a winter guard. The team competed virtually last weekend at the Winter Guard International, an organization producing indoor color guard, percussion and winds competitions.

Wow, Terry Redlin Elementary. What a cool tribute to the 22 countries represented in families at your school. They’re getting ready for Read Across America this week with the theme Celebrating a Nation of Diverse Readers.

Engineers and machinists in the making? Fourth grade students at John Harris Elementary recently studied about simple machines, including wheel and axles, screws, levers, inclined planes, wedges and pulleys. They created a poster, built a simple machine and demonstrated for their classmates how the simple machine worked.

And finally, this is our kind of principal: squeezing in a Friday game of Uno with a student at Discovery Elementary.
