School news you’ll love: McGovern Memories, kindness wins, 31 million steps

Love this, George McGovern Middle School and friends. The McGovern Memories programs brings business leaders and Sioux Falls police together with McGovern students to create positive experiences outside the building.

“The hope is that these student selected gain the perspective that the community cares about them, their success, and the contributions they make at school to better themselves is noticed,” the school said.

Recently they went to a salon, had lunch of their choosing and got to shop at Scheels.

First grader Ben at Fred Assam Elementary did some extra work on his art project to bring us this simple but powerful reminder. Nice work!

Temperatures finally got warm enough for recess again — and you can tell this Christ the King Elementary student couldn’t wait to get outside. We get it!

This is so cool! Beresford High School student Grace Norling made this set design for a contest in theatrical design through the South Dakota High School Activities Association. This year’s play prompt was Arthur Miller’s “Death of a Salesman.” Norling chose thematic schemes from the play to match her interpretation of what this set would look like and earned a superior medal in set design.

The staff at John Harris Elementary didn’t let the winter weather or pandemic slow them down. They met their goal of walking — at least the equivalent of — across the Lower 48 states. Or, in other words, they took more than 31 million steps! And they’re not done. They plan to set a different benchmark for March.
