Amazing things happen in our schools every day — if you know where to look! Do you know some school news others would love? Let us know at [email protected].

School should be full of “golden moments,” and this is a wonderful way to celebrate them. A partnership between First Lutheran Church and Lowell Elementary allows students to “buy” a book with a gold coin for doing something good. But you need to watch this to fully appreciate it.

Students at Harrisburg’s Journey Elementary are participating in the One School, One Book program organized by the Parent Teacher Organization. Students all received the book “The World According to Humphrey” by Betty Birney, which is about a hamster, and teachers are organizing activities around the story. During library time, the librarian has been discussing the author, and during art classes, the teacher is having students design Humphrey’s cage. A large stuffed Humphrey was purchased for the event, and he has been having a good time visiting staff and students. Here’s principal Ron Sylliaasen in the lunchroom with Humphrey quizzing students about the book.

There’s no caption, but we should all feel as happy at work as these two from Sonia Sotomayor Elementary.

Here’s a delicious assignment: Harrisburg High School TigersWork Learners in the STEP Academy partnered with learners in the high school culinary arts program to create ice cream cookie sandwiches. Learners were able to mix, scoop, bake, add ice cream and decorate with sprinkles.

A couple of weeks ago, we told you about Rosa Parks Elementary fifth graders trying to donate 1,000 boxes of cereal before their 1,000th day of school. Grand total: 1,348.

Happy fifth birthday to Toby, the popular therapy dog and frequent guest at the John Harris Elementary library.

Too soon to think about marching band season? Never! Enjoy this preview from Lincoln High School.
