School news: Kids meet with superintendent, special soccer league, moments to make you smile
Amazing things happen in our schools every day — if you know where to look! Do you know some school news others would love? Let us know at [email protected].
Nothing like face time with the boss! These kids from Sonia Sotomayor Elementary got a chance to share their thoughts on a variety of topics with Superintendent Jane Stavem. On the agenda for discussion: school lunch.

Love this new partnership for Laura B. Anderson Elementary School.

The new, free Riverview Soccer League kicked off thanks to volunteers and families who brought students together for a Saturday morning at the park, with partners including the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Sioux Falls Thrive, The Salvation Army Sioux Falls, Oak Hills Baptist Church and Boys & Girls Clubs of the Sioux Empire.

Nice work by Coach Jerry Olszewski and the Augustana Vikings football team for spending time at John Harris Elementary, teaching kids the importance of having positive character — plus a friendly tug of war contest against the staff!

These two buddies at Rosa Parks Elementary were so excited they showed up to school as twins that they were hoping to get their picture on the televisions in the school. “We went bigger and made them Facebook stars!” the school wrote on Facebook. We figured they deserved a place of honor on Pigeon605 too.

Learning can happen anywhere in the school. Hayward Elementary’s principal reviews letters of the alphabet with kindergartners over lunch.

Christ the King Elementary students celebrated a successful Walk-A-Thon fundraiser, circling the block around the school and finishing with a big total. They definitely earned those popsicles at the finish!

Now that’s school spirit, Eugene Field Elementary eagle.

The school district’s Senior Spotlight this week shines on Jefferson High School senior Rachel Hovdenes. Rachel is “a former New Tech High student, a future teacher, a current leader, a hard-working student and a kind-hearted, thoughtful friend.” She’s a member of the show choir at Jefferson, plays the cello in her free time and is committed to creating a welcoming atmosphere at this brand-new school.
And finally, do you know a kiddo who would to have this in the yard? CTE Academy students built this playhouse, and the Sioux Falls Education Foundation is selling raffle tickets. One ticket is $25, or you can purchase five for $100. The drawing will be held Dec. 10. Tickets can be purchased by clicking here. Talk about a memorable Christmas gift!
