School news of the week: Memorable classwork, impressive art, winning kids
Amazing things happen in our schools every day — if you know where to look! Do you know some school news others would love? Let us know at [email protected].
We bet they wish they could clone him at Sonia Sotomayor Elementary School. Brian picks up trash left behind by his classmates at lunch.

This has to be one of the more memorable moments of elementary school science, and they got to experience it at Laura B. Anderson Elementary recently. Nothing like learning about volcanoes and then making your own with baking soda, vinegar and dish soap.

The Memorial Middle School band and color guard were on hand to help kick off a school day last week.

Remember that show “Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader?” They re-created it at John Harris Elementary as four fifth graders and four teachers faced off, answering various trivia questions about national parks. It ended in a tie!

In honor of Constitution Day on Sept. 17, classroom 104 at Discovery Elementary School made tricorn hats like the delegates of the 1787 Constitutional Convention would have worn. Students decided whether to sign their names to vote for closing schools to honor Constitution Day — just like the delegates had to decide if they would sign the Constitution. Students looked at the Constitution, learned what each article explains and found out there are 27 amendments.

Nice work! Some student artists helped give the Beresford High School Watchdog mural on the football stadium a needed face-lift.

And this is some impressive artwork too. The drawing and painting students at O’Gorman High School completed a charcoal project, including this drawing of Mother Teresa using black and white charcoal pencils on plywood. A mini torch was used to put on the final touches.

And finally, it was a happy harvest for Eugene Field Elementary in partnership with Iron Fox Farms.
