Road Report: Week of Oct. 4

Jodi Schwan

October 4, 2021

Construction season is here, so we’re giving you a weekly look at what projects are done, where you’ll find traffic impacts and what’s scheduled next.

What’s done

Here’s a big one: Phillips Avenue between 14th and 18th streets has reopened to traffic.

This was a major project for the season, with work that included replacement of the water main and sanitary sewer, new historical streetlights, addition of a pedestrian bump-out at 17th Street, and reconstruction of the 18th Street intersection.

What’s underway

The city of Sioux Falls and the South Dakota Department of Transportation are jointly working on concrete and bridge repairs at several interchanges along Interstate 29. Work has or will take place at all interchanges between 26th Street and 60th Street North. Work south of Russell Street will be completed yet this year.

Work north of Russell may be completed in 2022. City work includes concrete pavement repairs, curb and gutter repairs, and joint resealing on Madison, 12th and 26th streets. State work includes low slump overlay on the 26th Street bridge over I-29 and polymer bridge deck seals on the 60th Street North and Russell Street bridges.

What’s next

60th Street North will be closed between National and Lewis avenues, and work is expected to take about one week.

Lane closures will be in place on I-29 just north of I-90, and work is expected to take about two weeks.

The inside westbound lane of 26th Street will be closed between Cambridge Avenue and Marion Road for water main maintenance work. Two lanes of traffic will be maintained in the eastbound lanes, and one lane of traffic will be maintained in the westbound lane. This is the fourth of five phases of work that will occur on 26th between Sertoma Avenue and Marion. The work is anticipated to be complete by late October.

The outside westbound lane of 26th Street and the sidewalk on the north side of the road will be closed between Highline Avenue and Veterans Parkway. Journey Construction will be performing sidewalk replacement and road construction. Weather permitting, this work is anticipated to be complete within one week. Drivers are urged to use caution and reduced speeds while traveling near the construction area and may want to consider alternate routes.

Beginning Thursday, the southbound lane of Cleveland Avenue will be closed between Pearl and Sixth streets. Southbound traffic will be shifted into the center turn lane to maintain two-way traffic. Work is expected to last a day.
