Road Report: Week of June 21
Construction season is here, so we’re giving you a weekly look at what projects are done, where you’ll find traffic impacts and what’s scheduled next.
What’s done
Marion Road between 53rd and 57th streets reopened to traffic as expected this week.
Phase two of the Marion Road project, which is 41st to 53rd streets and 57th south to the end of the cul-de-sac, started June 14. Work is on the east side of the street first and will shift to the west likely in mid-July. One lane in each direction will stay open, unless asphalt milling or paving is going on, in which case one direction will be maintained and one will be detoured. Work on this segment is expected to be completed in late July or early August.
South of 57th, Marion is going to be closed to traffic until that segment is done in mid-July.
What’s underway
One of the season’s major projects, Kiwanis Avenue from 12th to 41st streets, is making progress. The project consists of concrete rehabilitation and repair, full and partial depth repairs, curb and gutter repairs, accessible curb ramp replacement and diamond grinding of the surface.

Diamond grinding is new to Sioux Falls but not to the industry. After the pavement repairs are complete, the surface will be smoothened by a diamond grinder. This should reduce the roughness of the roadway and repair areas, providing a nice, smooth ride for motorists, the city said.

Phase one is from 12th to 26th streets and started April 13. Concrete repairs are done, and diamond grinding is happening for the next two weeks. Joint sealing and pavement markings will be installed after the diamond grinding is complete, and this segment should be open to traffic by early July.

Phase two is from 26th to 33rd streets and expected to start in mid-July.
Phase three actually started June 9, from 33rd to 41st streets, to ensure it’s done in mid-July well before school starts at O’Gorman.
New this week
Concrete repairs begin on Louise Avenue between 34th and 41st streets June 22. Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction. Work is expected to be done in about two weeks.
Concrete repairs and lane closures continue at 57th and Louise. Work should be done by the end of June.
Eighth Street will be closed between Phillips and Weber avenues from June 21-25. The city and BNSF Railway are repairing the railroad crossing near Weber.
What’s next
Work on Minnesota Avenue between 57th Street and St. Andrews Drive is scheduled to begin June 28, which will reduce that to one lane in each direction. The project is expected to be done in November.
