Construction season is here, so we’re back with our weekly look at what projects are done, where you’ll find traffic impacts and what’s scheduled next.

What’s done

Cliff Avenue: Cliff Avenue between 26th and 33rd streets has reopened fully to traffic. Work in this section of Cliff Avenue consisted of concrete pavement repairs.

Work is still underway on Cliff between 11th and 26th streets. This segment will upgrade the accessible curb ramps and install an asphalt overlay on the existing concrete surface.

Work also is still underway on Cliff between 49th and 56th streets – this segment is reconstructing and widening Cliff Avenue. The remaining work on the road will be complete later this fall.

What’s underway

60th Street North: A Road Report reader asked for an update on 60th Street North between Lewis and Sycamore avenues, and here it is: The South Dakota Department of Transportation will be removing and reconstructing the bridge on 60th Street North over Interstate 229.

As part of this project, the DOT is widening and raising the grade on the 60th Street North approaches to I-229. Crews are obtaining the dirt for this grading work from Sycamore Avenue between 60th Street North and Benson Road by cutting down the steep hill in this segment of Sycamore.

The city will then come in after the DOT is done with its grading work and install water main and asphalt pavement on Sycamore.

Work began in May and has consisted of cutting down the hill on Sycamore and widening and raising the grade along 60th Street North up to this point.

The bridge itself is expected to be removed in late September or early October and is expected to be reconstructed by early summer 2023.  Final completion of this project isn’t expected until August 2023. Sycamore Avenue between 60th Street North and Benson Road will reopen to traffic later this fall.

Marion Road: Work also continues on Marion Road between Foundation Court and 259th Street. Gravel placement is complete on Marion, and the contractor is working on grading, subgrade stabilization and gravel work on 259th east of Marion.

Paving work is expected to begin in two to three weeks. Marion Road will be reopened to traffic later this fall. This is the first phase of a multiyear project to pave Marion Road from Foundation Court to Minnehaha County Highway 130 — the Crooks-Renner Road.

Arrowhead Parkway: The first concrete pour on Arrowhead Parkway took place last week just west of Six Mile Road. Arrowhead Parkway remains closed between Six Mile Road and the Willow Run Golf Course entrance.

Arrowhead is expected to reopen to traffic later this fall. The project will not be fully complete until the summer of 2023.

41st Street: Traffic on 41st Street between Kuehn Park Avenue and Valley View Road switched from the north side of the road to the south side of the road last week to allow crews to perform concrete and storm drainage repairs. One lane of traffic in each direction will be maintained at all times.  This work is expected to be complete in about three weeks.

Minnesota Avenue: The outside southbound lane on Minnesota Avenue closed at 23rd Street last week to allow crews to perform a concrete pavement repair. One southbound lane will be maintained at all times during construction. The west sidewalk will be closed between 22nd and 24th streets with pedestrian traffic being detoured to the east side of Minnesota Avenue. This work is expected to be complete by the end of the week.

12th Street: The inside westbound lane on 12th Street between Lyon Boulevard and Carolyn Avenue closed Friday to allow crews to perform a concrete pavement repair. As work progresses, the lane closure will move to the middle lane. Two lanes of westbound traffic will be maintained at all times during construction.  This work is expected to be complete in one to two weeks.

26th Street: The eastbound lane on 26th Street closed Friday at Fourth Avenue to allow crews to perform curb ramp and sidewalk repairs at the intersection. In the upcoming weeks, the location of the lane closure at the intersection will change so that the westbound lane on 26th at Fourth will be closed. One lane of traffic in each direction will remain open at all times.  This work is expected to be complete in about three weeks.

What’s next

Sycamore Avenue: Beginning today, asphalt resurfacing work will begin on Sycamore Avenue between 26th and 41st streets. Intermittent lane closures will be set up to shift traffic to allow room for milling and paving equipment. One lane of traffic will be maintained in each direction at all times. This work is expected to be complete in about three weeks.

12th Street: Beginning today, the outside westbound lane and outside eastbound lane on 12th Street will be closed between Valley View Road and La Mesa Drive to allow crews to perform concrete pavement repairs. As work progresses, the lane closures will move to the middle lanes. One lane of traffic in each direction will be maintained at all times during construction. This work is expected to be complete in one to two weeks.

Recreation Trail: Beginning today, the Sioux Falls Recreation Trail will be closed between Falls Park Drive and North Drive to allow crews to reconstruct the trail. A detour will be provided during construction.  This work is expected to be complete by the end of October.
