Road Report: Oct. 21, 2024
Construction season is winding down. Here’s our weekly look at what projects are done, where you’ll find traffic impacts and what’s scheduled next as long as the weather holds.
What’s underway
Sixth Street: Work on Sixth Street between Foss Avenue and Veterans Parkway is making progress.

All underground utilities have been installed, and crews are working on final grading and gravel installation ahead of concrete paving this week.

This segment of Sixth Street is expected to open to one lane of traffic in each direction later this fall.

Crews will return in the spring of 2025 to finalize any work that does not get completed this year.

This segment of Sixth Street will be four lanes with a center median, turn lanes, streetlights and traffic signals.

Tallgrass Avenue: Work on Tallgrass Avenue between 74th and 85th streets is nearing completion.

Crews are working on finishing up the site restoration, landscaping and pavement striping.

Other work on this project included widening the previously existing rural gravel road to a four-lane, urban concrete and asphalt roadway with a median, turn lanes at existing and future intersections, streetlights and underground utility installation.

This segment of Tallgrass Avenue is expected to open to traffic late this week.

53rd Street: On Oct. 16, 53rd Street closed between Technology Drive and Louise Avenue to allow crews to install underground utilities. This work is expected to be complete in about one week.
What’s next
Arrowhead Parkway: Beginning today, Arrowhead Parkway will be closed between Veterans Parkway and Six Mile Road to allow crews to add a turn lane from Arrowhead Parkway onto Hein Avenue. Traffic will be detoured to 26th Street via Veterans Parkway and Six Mile Road. Local traffic for residents and businesses will be maintained from the east. This work is expected to be complete in about one week.
10th & 11th streets: Beginning today, traffic on 10th and 11th streets downtown will be reduced to one lane between Main and Phillips avenues to allow crews to work on the sanitary sewer. The work is expected to be complete by the end of the week.
12th Street: Beginning today, 12th Street will be closed between First and Second avenues to allow crews to perform road work. This work is expected to be complete in about three weeks.
Career Avenue: Beginning Wednesday, Career Avenue will be closed between Benson Road and 54th Street North to allow crews to install underground utilities. This work is expected to be complete in about one week.
Southeastern Avenue: Beginning Wednesday, Southeastern Avenue will be closed between Bison Trail and 270th Street to allow crews to pave the roadway. This work is expected to be complete by the end of the week.
