Road Report: Nov. 18, 2024
Construction season is winding down. Here’s our weekly look at what projects are done, where you’ll find traffic impacts and what’s scheduled next as long as the weather holds.
What’s done
South Veterans Parkway: Beginning today, South Veterans Parkway will open to traffic from Cliff to Western avenues.

Construction of the southern portion of Veterans Parkway is occurring in segments, with each one taking about two years to complete.

The segment from Cliff to Western avenues began in June 2023.

The next segment scheduled for construction is Cliff to Sycamore avenues, which is planned to begin in 2025.

In addition, Veterans Parkway from Interstate 90 to 57th Street will undergo changes in the coming months.

The first major change will be to make the speed limit throughout the Veterans Parkway corridor 50 mph.

This will match the speed limit on the newly constructed segment of South Veterans Parkway. Crews will install new speed limit signs along the completed northern sections yet this fall.
In the spring of 2025, crews will begin restriping Veterans Parkway to provide three lanes of travel in each direction. At this time, crews also will update the striping at intersections to incorporate dual left-turn lanes. Additional traffic signal heads will be installed to accommodate these lane changes. Traffic signal timing changes will be implemented so left turns will be protected, meaning motorists can turn left only when a green arrow is present.
Beginning in 2027, right-turn lanes will be added to intersections along previously completed sections. The schedule of locations to add right-turn lanes will be based on current traffic turning volumes, and all new right-turn lanes are anticipated to be installed by 2029.
What’s next
Downtown streets: Beginning Tuesday, crews will be performing sanitary sewer work in the alley between Phillips and Main avenues between 10th and 11th streets downtown. The impacts are listed below. This work is expected to be complete in about one week.
- 10th Street will be reduced to one lane between First and Main avenues.
- 11th Street will be reduced to one lane between Dakota and Phillips avenues.
- Main Avenue will be reduced to one lane between 10th and 11th streets.
Arrowhead & Veterans intersection open house: The city of Sioux Falls and the South Dakota Department of Transportation will host a public open house from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Fred Assam Elementary School, 7700 E. Willow Wood St., to provide information on the Arrowhead Parkway and Veterans Parkway intersection reconstruction project.
Construction is anticipated to begin in the spring of 2025 and continue through 2026. Information about the project and construction phasing will be shared at the open house. Members of the project team will be available for one-on-one conversations and to answer questions. More information about this project can be found at siouxfalls.gov/arrowhead.
Interstate 229: Beginning Wednesday, northbound Interstate 229 will be closed between Louise and Western avenues from 8 p.m. until 6 a.m. Thursday to allow crews to install sign structures over the interstate. Traffic will be detoured onto 57th Street during this closure.
Interstate 229: Beginning Thursday, southbound Interstate 229 will be closed between Western and Louise avenues from 8 p.m. until 6 a.m. Friday to allow crews to install sign structures over the interstate. Traffic will be detoured onto 57th Street during this closure.
