Road Report: May 9, 2022

Construction season is here, so we’re back with our weekly look at what projects are done, where you’ll find traffic impacts and what’s scheduled next.

What’s done

49th & West: The intersection of 49th Street and West Avenue has reopened to traffic.

14th Street: The work on 14th Street between Fourth and Fifth avenues is completed.

What’s underway

Minnesota Avenue: Beginning on May 6, the outside southbound lane and sidewalk on Minnesota Avenue closed between 14th Street and the railroad tracks. Two lanes of southbound traffic are being maintained by using the center turn lane. This work is expected to take about two weeks.

Marion Road: Beginning today, Marion Road will be closed between 41st and 44th streets to allow crews to replace underground utilities and reconstruct the street surfacing. This is part of the 41st Street & I-29 interchange reconstruction project. Motorists should use Sertoma or Louise avenues as alternate routes.  Marion is expected to reopen to traffic in three to five weeks.

41st Street: Temporary intersection closures on 41st Street west of I-29 will continue through the end of May to allow crews to install underground utilities and reconstruct the street surfacing.

Temporary closures of Terry Avenue, Cathy Avenue and Gateway Boulevard at 41st Street will alternate; only one intersection will be closed at a time.

49th Street: Work on the 49th Street extension between Western and West avenues is making progress.

West Avenue reopened at 49th last week, and now work has started along Western Avenue. A northbound right turn lane is being added on Western to turn east onto the new section of 49th.

Utility installation and grading took place last year.  Gravel work is in progress now and will be followed by paving.  This project will be completed later this summer.

Tallgrass & 85th: The intersection of Tallgrass Avenue and 85th Street is expected to reopen sometime this week.

What’s next

Sixth Street: Beginning on Wednesday, Sixth Street will be closed between Phillips and Weber avenues to allow Cherapa Place to install utilities.  Motorists should use Eighth Street as an alternate route. This work is expected to be completed in about two weeks.

Cliff Avenue: Beginning on Wednesday, work will begin on the reconstruction of Cliff Avenue from 49th to 56th streets. Cliff will be widened to include two lanes in each direction. Work will include water main, storm sewer, street lighting, grading, paving and restoration. Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction until school is out for the summer. While school is out, Cliff will be fully closed to traffic. Final completion is expected this fall.

Westport Avenue: Beginning on Tuesday, May 17, Westport Avenue will be closed between Sencore and Cherry Hill drives. Motorists should use Career Avenue as an alternate route. This work is expected to take about two days.
