Road Report: May 27, 2024
Construction season is here, so we’re back with our weekly look at what projects are done, where you’ll find traffic impacts and what’s scheduled next.
What’s done
Bike trail: The bike trail under the Sixth Street bridge downtown has reopened to bike and pedestrian traffic!

Work on Sixth Street east of the bridge will be complete later this summer.
What’s underway
10th Street: Work on 10th Street between Interstate 229 and Sycamore Avenue is off to a good start.

Crews have already milled, or ground down, the existing concrete about 2 inches along the south curb line in preparation for an asphalt overlay in the coming weeks.

Crews also are working on storm drainage improvements as they work to add a third eastbound lane in between I-229 and Thompson Avenue.

Other work on the project will include miscellaneous underground utility work, median improvements near I-229, miscellaneous concrete repairs, accessible curb ramp improvements, traffic signal improvements, lighting improvements and an asphalt overlay over the entire street.

The current phase of work in the outside eastbound lane is expected to be complete in mid-July. Work will switch to the outside westbound lane, then finally the middle lanes.

All work is expected to be complete in September.
Tallgrass Avenue: Work on Tallgrass Avenue between 74th and 89th streets is making good progress as well.

Asphalt paving will take place next week between 85th and 89th streets. About half of the intersection of 85th and Tallgrass is paved.

The goal is to have the intersection fully paved and open to traffic in June. North of 85th, crews are installing drain tile and drying out the dirt because of the recent rains.

After the dirt dries enough, grading and gravel installation will take place ahead of paving this segment later this summer. All work is expected to be complete in October.
Cliff Avenue: The inside northbound lane of Cliff Avenue closed at 54th Street on May 22 to allow crews to repair a water main break and repave the street within the affected area. This work is expected to be complete in about one week.
What’s next
Beginning today:
Tenth Street: Tenth Street will be closed between West and Euclid avenues to allow crews to reconstruct the street. Work will include underground utility improvements, new concrete curb and gutter, new asphalt paving, driveway approach replacement, accessible curb ramp upgrades and new street lighting. This is the first phase of a project to reconstruct 10th Street from West to Menlo avenues, Covell Avenue from 10th to 11th streets and Menlo Avenue from Ninth to 10th streets. Traffic should use Ninth, 11th or 12th streets as an alternate route. The first phase of the project is anticipated to be completed mid-August. The overall project is anticipated to be completed in November.
57th Street: The outside eastbound lane of 57th Street will be closed between Bahnson and Graystone avenues to allow crews to make preparations to install a new traffic signal at 57th Street and Graystone Avenue. The sidewalk along the south side of 57th between Bahnson and Sycamore avenues also will be closed as part of this project. Pedestrian traffic will be detoured to the sidewalk along the north side of 57th Street. The preparatory work will be complete in late June, with the traffic signals being installed in late 2024 or early 2025 pending material delivery.
Minnesota Avenue: The outside northbound lane of Minnesota Avenue will be closed between 26th and 33rd streets to allow crews to complete sidewalk improvements. Southbound traffic will not be impacted at this time. Pedestrians will be detoured to the west side of the street. This is the first of four phases of the project, which includes sidewalk improvements on both sides of Minnesota from 18th to 33rd streets. The entire project is anticipated to be complete in August.
Minnesota Avenue: The outside southbound lane on Minnesota Avenue will be closed just north of Russell Street to allow crews to work on a driveway approach. This work is expected to be complete in about one week.
Minnesota Avenue: Traffic on Minnesota Avenue near the future Veterans Parkway intersection will move from the east side of the street to the west side to allow crews to construct the east half of the Veterans and Minnesota intersection. One lane of traffic on Minnesota will be maintained at all times. This work is expected to be complete in approximately one month.
95th & Western: The intersection of 95th Street and Western Avenue will close to allow crews to construct a roundabout at this intersection. Traffic should use Minnesota or Louise avenues as alternate routes. The intersection is expected to reopen before school starts in August. The rest of Western between 95th Street and Lincoln County Highway 106 will remain closed until November.
57th Street: The outside eastbound lane on 57th Street will be closed at Tennis Lane to allow crews to perform concrete repairs. Eastbound traffic will be maintained in the inside lane of 57th. The sidewalk along the south side of 57th at Tennis Lane also will be closed with pedestrian traffic detoured to the sidewalk along the north side of 57th. This work is expected to be complete in about one week.
