Construction season is here, so we’re back with our weekly look at what projects are done, where you’ll find traffic impacts and what’s scheduled next.

What’s done

57th & Graystone: A new traffic signal at 57th Street and Graystone Avenue became operational May 9. Sidewalk and other infrastructure improvements occurred last year ahead of the delivery of the equipment this spring.

The installation of this traffic signal will help reduce delays experienced by motorists trying to access 57th Street from the surrounding neighborhood and increase safety for drivers and pedestrians. Drivers are urged to use caution as everyone adjusts to the new traffic pattern.

What’s underway

South Veterans Parkway: Work continues on the next segment of South Veterans Parkway between Cliff and Sycamore avenues.

Work is concentrated on the east end of the project, with grading work occurring mostly between Sycamore and Southeastern avenues at this time.

Additionally, underground utility work is in progress on Southeastern, and a pedestrian underpass is under construction just east of Cliff.

Sycamore and Southeastern are closed to traffic.

Motorists should use Highway 11 or Cliff Avenue as alternate routes. Work on this segment of Veterans Parkway is expected to be complete in late 2026.

85th & Heritage/Ellis: The new roundabout at the intersection of 85th Street and Heritage Parkway/Ellis Road opened to northbound and southbound traffic May 13.

85th Street east and west of the roundabout remains closed to traffic as work continues to reconstruct and pave 85th between Heritage/Ellis and Sundowner Avenue.

Asphalt paving has begun on that stretch.

The roundabout will need to be closed again for a few days sometime in the next several weeks to allow the contractor to complete paving work and to finish the landscaping work in the middle of the roundabout.

This is the second year of construction on this joint city of Sioux Falls and city of Tea project to improve 85th Street between Heritage Parkway/Ellis Road and Sundowner Avenue. The intersection of 85th and Sundowner was completed last year. All work is expected to be complete this summer.

Veterans Parkway: The outside lane and shoulder of both northbound and southbound Veterans Parkway closed between Arrowhead Parkway and 26th Street on May 15 to allow crews to perform concrete repairs, curb and gutter repairs, and joint resealing. One lane of traffic in each direction will be maintained in the inside lanes. In the upcoming weeks, the location of the lane closures on Veterans will vary between Arrowhead and 26th. At a minimum, one lane of traffic in each direction will remain open at all times. Access to businesses, homes and side streets will be maintained. This work is expected to be complete in late July.

What’s next

Recreational trail: Beginning today, the recreational trail will be closed from Western Avenue to 49th Street to allow crews to reconstruct the trail. This is the first of four phases to reconstruct the recreational trail from Western north to 41st Street. Trail users are urged to remain out of the construction area and use alternate routes. The overall project is expected to be complete in mid-August.

57th Street: The work on 57th Street between Old Yankton Road and Western Avenue originally scheduled to begin May 12 has been postponed and is scheduled to begin today instead. The outside westbound and outside eastbound lanes of 57th will have moving closures to allow crews to perform sidewalk repairs in the area between Old Yankton and Western. This work is expected to be complete in about one week.
