Construction season is here, so we’re back with our weekly look at what projects are done, where you’ll find traffic impacts and what’s scheduled next.

What’s underway

Arrowhead: Work is in full swing on Arrowhead Parkway east of Veterans Parkway.

Crews currently are installing deep sanitary sewer and storm drainage pipe, performing grading work and starting preparations to construct the pedestrian underpasses.

Arrowhead will remain closed east of Veterans for the remainder of the construction season.

Veterans Parkway remains open to traffic but is reduced to one lane in each direction.

Shared-use path: Work is also in progress to construct a new shared-use path along the south side of 26th Street on the east side of Sioux Falls.

This new path will connect the existing sidewalk near 26th Street and Highline Avenue to the neighborhood southeast of 26th and Veterans Parkway via a previously constructed pedestrian underpass across Veterans.

Construction of this shared-use path is part of the city’s bicycle plan and is funded by the city of Sioux Falls and a grant from the South Dakota Department of Transportation.

Work will be completed this fall.

Louise Avenue: The outside northbound lane on Louise Avenue closed between 34th and 41st streets May 7 to allow crews to perform utility work. This work is expected to be complete in about one week.

I-29 at I-90: Crews have begun shoulder resurfacing work on Interstate 29 at Exit 84 for Interstate 90. The inside and outside shoulders in both directions will be resurfaced. Additional work on the project includes asphalt milling, embankment surfacing and replacement of highway signs. Interstate traffic will be reduced to a single lane while work is occurring on the shoulders and guardrail. This work is expected to be complete in early June.

What’s next

I-90: Beginning today, the eastbound on-ramp to Interstate 90 at Brandon, which is Exit 406, will be closed to allow crews to reconstruct the ramp. Motorists in Brandon planning to travel east on I-90 should use Exit 410 via the signed detour route using South Dakota Highway 11, County Road 138, which is Aspen Boulevard, and County Road 105. This closure and detour will be in place until the reconstruction of the eastbound on-ramp at Exit 406 is complete in mid-July. The overall interchange reconstruction is expected to be complete in November.

57th Street: Beginning today, the outside westbound and outside eastbound lanes of 57th Street will have moving closures between Old Yankton Road and Western Avenue to allow crews to perform sidewalk repairs. This work is expected to be complete in about one week.

Veterans Parkway: Beginning today, the outside northbound lane closure along Veterans Parkway at Sixth Street will be extended north through Madison Street to allow crews to perform utility work. This work is expected to be complete in about two months.

Cleveland Avenue: Beginning Wednesday, the northbound left turn lane on Cleveland Avenue at 10th Street will be closed to allow crews to make repairs to a sanitary sewer manhole. No left turns from northbound Cleveland onto 10th will be allowed. Traffic on 10th will not be impacted. This work is expected to be complete in a few days.

La Mesa Drive: Beginning Wednesday, La Mesa Drive will be closed between Maple Street and Benson Road to allow crews to grade and pave the road. This work is expected to be complete in about one month.

Give input

The South Dakota Department of Transportation in conjunction with the city of Sioux Falls and the Federal Highway Administration will hold a public meeting open house to discuss the 10th and 11th streets viaduct replacement study. The open house is scheduled from 5 to 6:40 p.m. Wednesday at Holiday Inn City Centre, 100 E. Eighth St.

The goal of the open house is to gather input on preliminary viaduct replacement design concepts and potential bridge elements for replacing the viaduct structures. This input will help the study team refine and evaluate alternatives and develop preliminary recommendations to be presented at a future public meeting. For those unable to attend the in-person public meeting or those who desire additional details, information about the study can be found  at 1011viaductstudy.com.
