Premiere Playhouse announces new headquarters, program expansion
The Premiere Playhouse has a new home in downtown Sioux Falls and plans to grow from it.
The organization, which began as The Premiere Playhouse in 2003, has relocated its operational headquarters from the Orpheum Theater Center across the street to a 3,000-square-foot space in the Rock Island Plow Building at 300 N. Phillips Ave.

The move will allow for a larger, multipurpose space that can host expanded classes, rehearsals and events.
“This is a meaningful milestone for us,” said Tammi Waltjer-Haverly, board president. “It positions us not only as a theater but as a cultural hub and learning center for all.”

As part of the expansion, The Premiere Playhouse will be “significantly lowering” its ticket prices, she said.
“While this moving is not without risk, we believe it’s the right one,” she said, adding the hope is that donors and sponsors will support the increased accessibility and help offset it.
The move “is more than just a physical move,” said Oliver Mayes, executive artistic director. “It’s a reflection of our growing vision.”

As part of that, The Premiere Playhouse will streamline its programming into three core divisions.
Mainstage Series
Local theater productions will continue to be brought to the Orpheum Theater stage as they have for more than two decades. The coming season will feature:
- “Noises Off!,” Oct. 3-5
- “Hairspray,” April 17-26, 2026
- “Legally Blonde,” June 12-21, 2026
Artist Development Series
The Premiere Playhouse plans to evolve its education programs for teens and adults, including its Penguin Project, which produces theatrical productions for those age 10 to 25 with all abilities.
Underground Series
This venture will take The Premiere Playhouse into experimental performances in collaboration with Icon Entertainment. These immersive productions will be held in downtown venues such as Icon Event Hall, DaDa Gastropub, Club David, Myrtle’s Fur Vault & Bar and Parker’s Bistro.
Experiences will include cabaret dinner theater, brunch play productions and nightlife musical performances.

Part of the expansion was made possible through the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation. Additionally, The Premiere Playhouse is trying to raise $30,000 in matching funds to fully support the first year of expansion.

Sioux Falls is rich in arts and culture, and we are committed to creating a place where local artists can thrive,” Mayes said.
“Modernizing our offerings and expanding our resources is a much-needed service for our growing community.”
