Road Report: June 30, 2025
Construction season is here, so we’re back with our weekly look at what projects are done, where you’ll find traffic impacts and what’s scheduled next.
What’s done
Recreation trail: The recreation trail repairs at Tuthill Park near the Cliff Avenue and Interstate 229 interchange are substantially complete. Trail access between Tuthill and Pasley parks has been reopened to the public. Because of the wet conditions last week, final restoration could not be completed as scheduled. The contractor will return during the week of July 7 to finish the remaining site restoration work. During that time, a sidewalk bypass will be in place to maintain trail access.

What’s underway
26th Street: The South Dakota Department of Transportation began maintenance work and repairs on the 26th Street bridge over Interstate 229 on June 23.
Traffic is reduced to one lane of traffic in each direction during construction. This work is expected to be complete in about one week.
Recreation trail: The recreation trail is open now from Yankton Trail Park to the Sertoma Park trail bridge in southwest Sioux Falls. The trail between 49th Street and the bridge remains closed for reconstruction. A detour is in place, directing trail users to the trail on the west side of the river at the bridge and 41st Street. This phase of the project is expected to be complete in about three weeks, and the entire project is expected to be complete in mid-August.

Arrowhead Parkway: Construction crews are making progress on Arrowhead Parkway east of Veterans Parkway.

The extremely deep sanitary sewer installation continues on Arrowhead.

Sanitary sewer force main installation has begun along Veterans between Sixth Street and Arrowhead.

Retaining wall construction has begun on the east end of the project, and grading work continues.

26th Street: Although not part of the Arrowhead and Veterans project, Minnehaha County will be replacing a box culvert drainage structure under 26th Street starting on July 7, which will result in 26th being closed between Veterans Parkway and Six Mile Road for three to four weeks.

Motorists should follow the official detour route along Six Mile Road to 41st Street to get around both closures. The 2025 portion of this project will be complete and reopened to one lane of traffic in each direction in November.

Minnesota Avenue: The sidewalk replacement project along Minnesota Avenue is making progress.

Concrete work is nearing completion on the east side of Minnesota between 14th and 18th streets.

The work in this segment should be complete in the next week or so. Beginning on June 30, the existing outside northbound lane closure in place on Minnesota between 14th and 18th streets will be extended north to 11th Street to allow crews to complete sidewalk improvements on the east side of Minnesota.

Work is expected to begin on the west side of Minnesota between 11th and 14th streets during the week of July 7. The entire project is anticipated to be completed by the end of August.

What’s next
Kiwanis Avenue: Beginning on Tuesday, the outside northbound lane of Kiwanis Avenue will be closed just north of 41st Street to allow crews to perform utility work. This work is expected to be complete by the end of the day.
Veterans Parkway: Beginning on Wednesday, the outside northbound lane closure in place on Veterans Parkway between Sixth and Madison streets will be extended north of Madison to allow crews to continue installing sanitary sewer force main pipe. The entire project is expected to be complete in November.
12th Street: The roadwork originally scheduled to begin Tuesday on 12th Street from Ellis to Marion roads has been postponed until July 7. Initially, construction will affect only eastbound traffic around Sertoma Avenue and Valley View Road, limiting traffic to one eastbound lane near the intersections to allow crews to perform repairs. This work is part of the overall asphalt overlay project and includes accessible curb ramp improvements and concrete repairs. This phase of the work is expected to take about two weeks. The overall project is expected to be complete in September.
