Construction season is here, so we’re back with our weekly look at what projects are done, where you’ll find traffic impacts and what’s scheduled next.

What’s done

Sycamore & 33rd: The Sycamore Avenue and 33rd Street intersection is fully opened to traffic.

What’s underway

41st Street: The 41st Street and Interstate 29 interchange project continues to progress with utility work on the north side. The north part of Marion Road is now closed to traffic at 41st, and utility work has begun. The project is progressing well, the city said.

Arrowhead Parkway: Arrowhead Parkway is closed to through traffic from the Six Mile Road intersection to 26th Street for the installation of a box culvert.

The road should be reopened to traffic by early October.

41st & Sycamore: On the 41st Street and Sycamore Avenue project, all pavement removals have been completed on the northwest quadrant, and crews are working on underground utilities.

41st & Bahnson: The contractor also is working on footings for the new traffic signals at Bahnson Avenue and 41st Street intersection.  This project is expected to be complete later this fall.

Cliff Avenue: Work on Cliff Avenue between 49th and 56th streets continues, and last week crews lined a 72-inch reinforced concrete pipe under Cliff  to extend the life of the pipe.

Lining operations are continuous once started. The liner is filled with water, and the water is heated to cure the pipe. Once the pipe is cured, the water is drained, and you are left with a lined pipe.

The contractor also continues to work on grading on the west side of the project to widen the section, which will eliminate the southbound bottleneck at Tomar Road. This will increase the overall capacity of this section of road.

49th Street: Work on the 49th Street extension from Western to West avenues is nearing completion. Minor clean up and landscaping remain to be completed.

The hope is to have this open in two to three weeks.

Area interstate & highway projects: The South Dakota Department of Transportation has started work on various routes in and around Sioux Falls.

Project work includes pavement and joint repair at several locations: Interstate 29 from Lennox to Sioux Falls, Interstate 90 from Brandon to Sioux Falls, Highway 100 from Madison to Rice streets and Highway 115 from Dell Rapids to Sioux Falls.

The removal of existing concrete on I-29 began last week. During this process, sections of the road will be sawed, removed and repoured. Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction until the concrete has attained strength to reopen both lanes. The process and reduction of lanes will occur at each construction location. The overall completion date for the project is June 30, 2023.

14th Street: The outside westbound lane of 14th Street between Cliff Avenue and Fourth Avenue is closed to traffic to perform concrete repairs.  The work is anticipated to be complete by the end of the week.

Minnesota Avenue: The outside northbound lane of Minnesota Avenue is closed between 33rd and 39th streets to allow crews to complete sidewalk improvements. Southbound traffic will not be impacted at this time. This work is anticipated to be complete by mid-August.

15th Street: 15th Street is closed between Sycamore Avenue and Suburban Drive to allow crews to install new utilities.  This work is anticipated to be complete by the end of the week.

Fourth Avenue: The inside lanes of North Fourth Avenue are closed to allow work on new utilities.  The work is expected to be complete by the end of the week.

What’s next

Russell Street frontage road: Beginning today, the Russell Street frontage road between West Avenue and Bailey Street will be closed to allow construction crews to install new water main. The closure is expected to last for four weeks.

10th Street: Beginning today, East 10th Street will be closed to traffic from Arrowhead Parkway to Tumble Creek Circle for the completion of utility work. The road is scheduled to be open in early August. A detour will not be provided.

Second Avenue: Beginning today, there will be sidewalk closures on both sides of Second Avenue between Second and Third streets to allow crews to install utilities.  The work is expected to be complete in one week.

10th Street: Beginning on Tuesday, the outside eastbound lane of 10th Street between Lewis and St. Paul avenues will be closed to traffic to allow crews to perform concrete repairs.  The work is anticipated to be completed within one week.
