Road Report: July 17, 2023

Construction season is here, so we’re back with our weekly look at what projects are done, where you’ll find traffic impacts and what’s scheduled next.

What’s done

60th Street North: The bridge on 60th Street North over Interstate 229 reopened July 11.

Contractors will be working intermittently on finishing up the permanent striping, restoration and cleanup work until mid- to late August.

What’s underway

Benson & I-229: The Benson Road and Interstate 229 interchange work is progressing well.

The first concrete pour on Benson Road east of the interstate occurred last week.

Crews also are working on the underground utilities west of the interstate, as well as widening the bridge over the interstate.

Benson Road east of I-229 will reopen later this fall. The entire project will not be complete until the spring of 2025.

57th Street: Work is continuing on 57th Street east of Veterans Parkway.

The underground utility work is complete, and crews are working on stabilizing the soil under the future road by mixing cement powder into the soil to stiffen and strengthen the road base.

Gravel installation and concrete paving will follow over the next several weeks.

Here’s a look at the progress:

Marion Road: Work has started to reconstruct and widen Marion Road from Minnehaha County Highway 130, also known as 258th Street, to the south one-half mile. Contractors are working on grading the roadway, which will be followed by installation of water main and storm drainage pipe. This project will be complete in November.

Sixth Street: Work is progressing on Sixth Street between Interstate 229 and Sycamore Avenue.

Contractors are working to install an asphalt overlay on Sixth Street between Leadale and Shepherd avenues, as well as on adjacent areas of Cleveland Avenue.

Contractors also are working on concrete repairs between Shepherd and Sycamore. The asphalt overlay work should be complete in the next couple of weeks, but the concrete repairs on the east side of the project will extend into October.

As part of the asphalt overlay work, beginning today, Cleveland Avenue will be closed at Sixth Street between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. to allow crews to pave asphalt through the intersection. One lane of traffic will be maintained in each direction on Sixth Street. Drivers will not be able to access Cleveland Avenue from Sixth Street during this work.

57th Street: The outside westbound lane on 57th Street closed west of Western Avenue on July 13 to allow crews to perform a concrete repair. One westbound lane of traffic is being maintained during construction. This work is expected to be complete in about one week.

12th Street: The inside westbound lane and the turning lane on 12th Street closed east of Sertoma Avenue on July 13 to allow crews to perform a concrete repair. One westbound lane of traffic is being maintained during construction. This work is expected to be complete in about one week.

Benson Road: The outside eastbound lane of Benson Road closed between 10th and Casco avenues July 13 to allow crews to bore electrical utility lines. This work is expected to be complete in about two weeks.

What’s next

Cliff Avenue: Beginning today, the outside southbound lane of Cliff Avenue will be closed between Rice and Fourth streets to allow crews to perform concrete repairs. This work is expected to be complete in about one week.

33rd Street: Beginning today, 33rd Street will be closed between Grange and Prairie avenues to allow crews to perform repairs. Drivers should use 26th Street as an alternate route.  This work is expected to be complete in about two weeks.

41st & I-29: The northbound on-ramp from 41st Street to Interstate 29 will close Tuesday to allow crews to reconstruct the ramp. This work is expected to take six to eight weeks. Motorists should us 26th Street to access northbound I-29 during the closure.
