Road Report: Nov. 25, 2024

This is our final Road Report for this year’s construction season! We’ll be back with ongoing project updates in the spring.

What’s done

Benson Road: The bridge over the diversion channel and railroad tracks on Benson Road just east of Minnesota Avenue reopened to traffic Nov. 20.

Work began in February and included removing and replacing the bridge deck, which is the driving surface, the bridge approaches and street lighting.

Prairie Avenue: The traffic signals on Prairie Avenue at 10th and 11th streets are substantially complete and operational.

These traffic signals were installed as part of the larger “15th Street Bicycle Boulevard” that the city has been working on to create a pedestrian-friendly route connecting downtown to the main bike trail near the zoo via 15th Street, Prairie Avenue and Ninth Street.

Other work in recent years along this pedestrian-friendly corridor has included a new pedestrian signal on Kiwanis Avenue, construction of bump-outs and chicanes along 15th Street and the construction of traffic circles on Ninth Street at Prairie and Duluth avenues.

What’s next

Madison Street: Beginning today, Madison Street will be closed between La Mesa Drive and Ellis Road to allow crews to install sanitary sewer. This work is expected to be complete in the spring of 2025.

Open house for 10th & 11th Street viaducts: The South Dakota Department of Transportation in conjunction with the city of Sioux Falls and the Federal Highway Administration will hold a public meeting open house to introduce and receive public comment on the development of alternatives to replace the 10th and 11th street viaducts in Sioux Falls. The open house is scheduled for 5 to 7 p.m.  Dec. 3 at Monick Yards, 605 E. Eighth St. Information on the viaduct replacement study can be found  at 1011viaductstudy.com.
