New tennis complex taking shape at Tomar Park

The new tennis complex at Tomar Park is getting closer to play.

All the concrete for the 12 courts has been placed, and the surfacing has started to be prepped. Concrete footings for the shade structures are in, and the retaining wall along Twin Oaks Road is wrapping up.

Lights are up for the courts, and underground electrical conduit and water service for a drinking fountain and bottle filler have been installed.

Contractor Beck & Hofer Construction has started to place concrete between the courts, with the goal of completing all alleys in early July.

“The courts — fencing and surfacing — are still on schedule to be complete at the end of August,” park development specialist Tory Miedema said.

The grand concourse and east-west concourse are scheduled to be poured by the end of this week.

“Tomar is looking amazing,” said Lydia Healy, executive director of the Sioux Falls Tennis Association.

“We are still fundraising so that we may purchase all the little things necessary to operate the courts efficiently and, of course, for a tennis building to store supplies and run the tournaments, lessons and leagues.”

The city also has more plans for the park, including expanded parking, a basketball court and a shelter.

“This will be a separate project (bid) in the fall to replace neighborhood park elements displaced by the courts,” Miedema said. “It will be complete next spring.”
