My 605: Joshua Novak

What’s home unless you make it your own? My 605 takes you inside the lives, loves and little secrets of those who call South Dakota – area code 605 – home.

This week’s edition features Joshua Novak, who owns Main St. Media House, co-founded apparel company Flyover Country and is the owner of pigeon Paul TwoHanken.

My home in the 605 is: I call downtown my home. It has been really fun to live in The Cascade building at the end of Philips for the past year and a half. I have made a lot of great friends there, and it gives me the chance to walk to my office every day — except when it’s minus 40. I’m driving five blocks and don’t feel guilty about it at all.

The biggest reason I live in the 605 is: 605 has given me the opportunity to build up a couple of companies and truly do my thing. I get to spend most of my day working with different businesses and brands on their digital marketing. Recently I got to partner with Vaney Hariri to start Flyover Country.

It’s a Midwest clothing brand with a focus on sharing about people in the region. I am also fortunate enough to have my parents and a set of my grandparents in Sioux Falls as well, which I’m grateful for.

After home, I spend the most time here: Lately it’s been my office or a coffee shop working.

When I need to get away, you’ll find me: My grandparents have a cabin up at Lake Madison. Love going up there to wakeboard or do nothing at all.

The best meal I ever ate in the 605 was at: Honestly, anything from Bread & Circus Sandwich Kitchen.

My go-to coffee shop is: The Source. I sit at the bar there working a lot. So far, the owner Kristen hasn’t kicked me out for loitering yet.

My favorite place to grab an adult beverage in the 605 is: The patio at Carpenter Bar for sure. Very excited for their new spot Highball to open up.

When I need to experience the great outdoors, you’ll find me: Does a bar or restaurant patio count as exploring the outdoors? I do enjoy running on the bike trail or snowboarding when I can in the winter.

The spot I’d recommend for a date is: Ideally somewhere downtown your date hasn’t been before.

The best pizza in the 605 is: A slice at Pizza Cheeks with some of that hot honey on the side. *chef’s kiss*

When my friends and I get together, you’ll probably find us: I feel like everything I do with friends only revolves around food — and honestly not upset about that at all.

The place you never can go wrong taking kids is: No kids. But sometimes I wish I did, just to justify being able to go to the Washington Pavilion Science Center like I used to in elementary school.

When I want to meet new people in the 605 I go: Concerts to me have always been a fun place to run into people I know and meet new people.

My best memory in the 605 is: Concerts and festivals that have been thrown in the city have always been a highlight. From That Sounds Decent, which everyone should go this year on Aug. 28; DreamFest, which Denham started throwing last year; and really any live music going on. I love being able to take photos for these kind of events. Just in Sioux Falls, I’ve been able to take photos for B.o.B., Prof, 50 Cent, Shwayze and Coolio.

The one thing I’m least crazy about in the 605 is: Why are the parking ticket people so good at their job? I swear it takes just three minutes over the limit, and then boom, there’s a ticket on my car.

And finally, life in pictures. Here are the top three photos that most sum up My 605:
