At only 4 years old, Akira, fondly known as Kiki, has captured the hearts of countless people.

Born prematurely and facing a shortage of in-home nursing services, KiKi discovered a second family in 2022 among the dedicated nurses and caregivers at LifeScape’s Specialty Hospital, known as the Fisher Coon Unit.

“She loves to rock and cuddle in the morning and talk about her day,” social worker Kellie Lee said, highlighting the warmth and joy Kiki brings to each day despite her challenges.

Kiki’s determination matches her infectious smile as she works closely with her team of occupational, physical and speech therapists.

“She recently received her first speech-generating communication device, which has given her the opportunity to more specifically communicate functionally and socially with others,” said Kate Budig, a speech-language pathologist.

Because of her tracheostomy, speaking hasn’t always been simple for Kiki. However, through the collaborative efforts and hard work of her team, she has improved her breath support and gained confidence in communicating, ensuring that she can at least capture others’ attention.

“Being a witness to how she has been able to blossom and more fully show off her skills and personality in social interactions is beautiful and priceless,” Budig said.

“Kiki is truly a one-of-a-kind girl,” added Grace Bolin, a speech-language pathologist. “From first seeing her rarely tolerate wearing her hearing aids and glasses and just starting to use ASL to now using a high-tech communication system, starting to drink and eat and walking has been momentous!”

As Kiki conquers her speech challenges, she has made significant strides in her ability to walk independently.

“One of her biggest milestones she has accomplished in physical therapy was taking her first steps independently (without a gait trainer or without physical assistance),” said Kristi Steptoe, a physical therapist. “Her face lit up, and everyone that was a witness to that had tears in their eyes.”

With the support and love of her hospital family and therapists, she continues to thrive. Each milestone — each step toward breathing on her own — is a testament to her courage and the dedication of those who care for her.
