Sioux Falls ranks among the nation’s best places for bicycling.

The League of American Bicyclists recognized Sioux Falls as a bicycle-friendly city for the 13th year in a row.

The city was recertified as a bronze-level city, based on a review of an application, as well as consultation with local cyclists and bike advocates.

Here are three projects city officials said helped contribute to the rating:

  • Five miles of new paved shared-use bike paths added since 2017.
  • New side path added along Veterans Parkway from Interstate 90 to 57th Street.
  • Chicanes, which are offset curb extensions, added along 15th Street to slow traffic.

“We appreciate the continued recognition from the League of American Bicyclists as confirmation that we’re working to create safer biking opportunities here,” senior planner Sam Trebilcock said.

What’s next

The city has several projects planned in the coming years to promote bicycle safety:

  • Updating the Bicycle Master Plan with adjustments for future growth.
  • Continuing bike path construction along Veterans Parkway from 57th Street to Interstate 229.
  • Focusing efforts on Sioux Falls Complete Streets to prioritize consideration of bicycle, pedestrian and transit accommodations in planning for roadway projects.

Other bronze-level cities in the area include Brookings and Marshall, Minnesota. In total, 497 U.S. communities have been selected for Bicycle Friendly Community awards.
