How the gift of time can build lifetime memories this summer and beyond
This paid piece is sponsored by LifeScape.
On nearly 300 acres outside Dell Rapids, hundreds of people make lifelong memories every year.
And that includes the volunteers who support an experience for those served by LifeScape at Trent River Camp.
“I was working at LifeScape when this all started,” said Jerry Klein, a Trent River Camp volunteer who retired from a full-time role with the nonprofit.

“Every week, I get to see so many of the people that I used to assist in their daily tasks. LifeScape made such an impact in my life. I have so many friendships made with the people I served and am trying to repay them for all the fulfillment they caused in me!”
For the past 21 years, more than 8,610 people supported by LifeScape have been impacted by service from volunteers.
For 16 consecutive weeks beginning in June, volunteers support a beautiful getaway for people who never will forget it.

Their days are filled with hayrides, feeding cows, fishing, adaptable tractor rides, good food and music.
“Every week is just like homecoming for everyone because the volunteers and people served have made so many friends through this,” Klein said.

LifeScape volunteer coordinator Becky Sluiter has witnessed beautiful relationships like this come to life since the beginning.
“The teamwork, leadership, coordination and kindness of the more than 30 volunteers is truly overwhelming,” Sluiter said. “Volunteers’ actions change lives.”
Sluiter has been able to build many relationships through her position, including adding to her team.
“The bond with Trent River and LifeScape is profound,” said Nick Wolf, who joined LifeScape as a volunteer associate six months ago. “The relationship is solid, and the connection is emotionally exhilarating. If you want to make a difference and truly see immediate and positive response, join us once. You’ll be hooked, trust me.”

LifeScape offers volunteer activities for large groups, small groups and individuals. The nonprofit welcomes volunteers in all areas of its service lines such as the Specialty Hospital and School, Adult Services and many more. From rocking babies to arts and crafts, and just being a friend, volunteering can bring not only joy to the people supported but to you as well.
“Volunteering creates an opportunity to extend past us by sharing what we know or lending a hand to make light work. Everyone has their own unique talents, hobbies and interests to share,” Wolf said.
“Together, we learn from each other. Together, through volunteer opportunities, we empower all people to live their best lives.”
