Hayward Park enhancements are nearly done — but some are held up

A project to upgrade Hayward Park is nearly complete, but the two main recreational elements got hit by supply chain-related delays.

“The spray pad itself is complete, but delivery of the associated mechanical system that runs the spray equipment has been delayed,” city park development specialist Mike Patten said.

“We are hoping this will be delivered later this month and installed in time to test yet this fall.”

The obstacle course-style play equipment also is delayed and won’t be shipped until later this fall — likely November, he added.

“Depending on fall weather conditions, we may get the play equipment installed this year,” Patten said. “If winter hits us early, we may be finishing the play equipment next spring.”

Meanwhile, the off-leash dog park with artificial turf is ready for the canines of the northwest Sioux Falls neighborhood.

The walking loop, site grading, irrigation and landscaping also are done, and the contractor has finished the restroom and mechanical building.

“The park looks great other than waiting on the two main recreational programming elements,” Patten said.

A ribbon-cutting likely will be held next spring once it’s all done.
