From O’Gorman to Iowa State: How my high school experience shaped my college journey

Transitioning from high school to college is a big step, and many alumni from O’Gorman High School share how their high school experience played a major role in preparing them for the challenges ahead. Now, as a freshman studying mechanical engineering at Iowa State University, Will Heineman shares how O’Gorman gave him the foundation he needed to succeed.

Academic preparation: Learning to study effectively
One of the biggest takeaways from my time at O’Gorman was learning how to study effectively. I remember how stressful my high school calculus class was — I often felt overwhelmed and unsure how to handle it all. However, that experience turned out to be a blessing. When I took calculus in college, I realized how well O’Gorman had prepared me. The material felt like a breeze, and I could just go right through it.

Developing strong study habits in high school made all the difference in my college experience. I didn’t just learn the content – I learned how to study efficiently, which has been crucial in tackling the rigor of college.
Faith and personal growth
Another significant aspect of my time at O’Gorman was the role of faith in my education. Now that I attend a non-Catholic university, I’ve had to put my faith into practice on my own. I’m grateful for the lessons I learned at O’Gorman – not only teaching me about my faith but how to pray and understanding my beliefs.

Overcoming challenges and finding balance
One of the biggest adjustments in college has been managing my time. The transition to a busier schedule was a challenge at first, but I realized that O’Gorman had already given me the tools to succeed.

In high school, I balanced multiple extracurricular activities while taking AP courses, and that experience taught me valuable time management skills. I remembered those habits going into college, which eventually helped me find the right balance between academics, activities and personal time.
Accomplishments and looking ahead
One of my biggest accomplishments since graduating high school has been the ability to transfer many AP and college credits, which could allow me to graduate early. O’Gorman sets students up for success not only with the rigorous academic environment but the encouragement to challenge us through advanced coursework.
However, O’Gorman doesn’t just prepare students for success in the classroom – it prepares them to be good people too. The values instilled in me during high school continue to influence how I approach my college experience and the relationships I build along the way.
Favorite memories: Powerlifting and leadership
One of my favorite memories from O’Gorman is winning Best Overall Lifter at one of my powerlifting meets. While winning the meet was exciting, the experience was about more than just the competition. Powerlifting gave me a lot of tools to be an effective leader and how to mentor others. These lessons have continued to serve me well beyond high school.

From our alumni specialist
Many times, we receive heartfelt calls from alumni reminiscing about their high school journey, eager to share the moments that shaped them. No matter where life has taken them — across the country, into new careers or through life’s unexpected turns — they all share the same sentiment: The lessons they learned at O’Gorman remain with them, guiding their choices, strengthening their faith and reminding them of the community that will always be home.
