Inside the brightly decorated halls of Longfellow Center, where the heart of DakotAbilities’ Meaningful Day program takes place, it’s impossible not to feel the holiday spirit.

“We’re on a roll from September through the end of the year,” said Shelly Johnson, director of development.

“Between the Sioux Empire United Way campaign, Direct Support Professionals Week and the holidays — Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas — there’s always something happening. We even put on two plays in those final months. Our halls, rooms and offices are decked out. It’s just a fun, busy time of year.”

But amid the festivities, there’s a deeper purpose at work: sharing the story of DakotAbilities’ mission and its impact on the lives of adults with disabilities.

Each November, DakotAbilities joins South Dakota Gives, a statewide celebration of generosity and community spirit. This monthlong initiative rallies individuals, businesses and foundations to support nonprofits across South Dakota, culminating on Giving Tuesday — Dec. 2 this year. The movement uses the hashtag #ForSouthDakota and shines a spotlight on the vital role nonprofits play in improving lives throughout the state.

Organizers of South Dakota Gives provide a playbook of ideas to help nonprofits maximize their social media outreach, with prize incentives fueling even more community engagement. For DakotAbilities, it’s an opportunity to share powerful stories, thank donors and invite new supporters to join the mission.

Year-end giving is especially meaningful for DakotAbilities. Contributions during South Dakota Gives directly support the Meaningful Day program, where participants explore art, music, and life skills — including employment and volunteer opportunities.

Donors also can give to the Accessibility Fund, which supports new construction and remodeling of the organization’s 17 homes across Minnehaha County. Construction of two twin homes is underway on the northwest side of Sioux Falls, designed to serve 16 people in need of on-site skilled nursing care. Supporters also may choose to contribute to the Endowment Fund, helping ensure the long-term sustainability of DakotAbilities’ mission.

“The growing need in our community and our mission to help people live full and meaningful lives doesn’t stop when the going gets tough,” Johnson said.

“Our priorities remain steadfast: the health, safety and well-being of adults with disabilities in our community.”

As the season of giving approaches, DakotAbilities reflects with deep gratitude.

“Words can’t express how appreciative we are of our donors and volunteers,” Johnson added. “South Dakota Gives is one more way to celebrate their good work and kind hearts. If even one more person is inspired to act by what they see, it’s all worthwhile.”

Add a little sparkle to your holiday festivities!
